In this reflective year-end post from 2015, amanico shares his top horological discoveries, highlighting modern and vintage pieces that captured his attention. His focus on Jaeger-LeCoultre and Girard-Perregaux reveals a discerning taste for both innovative design and classic execution, offering readers a glimpse into a collector's annual journey.

This year allowed me to discover some great modern and vintage watches.

My modern coups de coeur are turning around my two favorite brands, JLC and GP. No Ulysse Nardin for me, in 2015, for once.

So, which are these watches?

JLC:

The grand coup de coeur is for this Geophysic Universal Time. first because I am a big fan of world time watches, the, last but not least, because it is original and superbly executed ( dial and movement ).

Girard Perregaux impressed me a lot, too, with several watches, such as the well named Vintage 45 Mechanics of Art, Blue:

The " Le Corbusier ", another piece of art, really amazing.

And the black magic Neotourbillon:

I would also name Patek Philippe, for once, which came with the superb 5370: Split Second and Black Enamel dial, almost reaching perfection...

If the sub dials were aligned on a line between 3 and 9 o clock, it would be perfection, for me.

2015 is the first year I paid a strong interest in ... Montblanc Watches...

The Orbis Terrarum, first:

And a very serious interest in this 1858 Chronograph, monopusher:

What about this L.U.C Tribute? I discovered it in 2011, but I could take some serious pictures this year, only. Which renewed my love for that watch:

2015 is the year I discovered an Independant, Laurent Ferrier, and this superb steel case, black dial:

Don't ask where to get it, it was made in 5 pieces, already sold.

In the vintage universe, I discovered some treasures, and immediately added them in my wish list.

Among them, this superb Breguet Type XX:

A lovely Gyromatic:

and my absolute favorite, the Mimo Centric.

The Angelus Datalarm World Time is on the top of the list...

I am not a Navitimer guy, but when you see something like that, it is hard to not change your mind:

Not a Heuer guy, either, but this one is a superb exception:

This year, I re discovered the Majeteks, from Lemania, Eterna and Longines:

As well as the WWW, which I have to find!

My horological additions were not many, because I had to service some important watches, and servicing watches is a big budget...

The two Deep Sea Alarm, of course:

The Geophysic Crosshairs, which needed a good service plus a correct set of hands...

The Omega CK 2914 Pakistani Air Force:

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Milspec:

And the Breitling Superocean 1004:

And believe me, when you have to service so many vintage watches, it can cost you the price of a nice watch... But servicing these treasures is an obligation, a responsability.

So, I had not other choice than letting go some of my watches, those I didn't wear a lot, and to trade some of them to get my new targets.

But I guess this is a familiar game for most of watch collectors, isn't it.

Aaah, a last thing, I poisoned my lawyer colleague, Julie, who discovered watches past year, but who is totally bitten, now...

Here are the pieces of her collection:

Breitling Unitime:

Jardur Chronograph

Lemania Royal Navy:

JLC E 2648 Chronograph:

Girard Perregaux Traveller Alarm:

Not a bad score for a newcomer in watches!

I don't know how 2016 will look like. Probably some nice discoveries, a few watches to service, and one or two more watches in my collection, plus some pieces to go, as I want to seriously reduce the collection to grab less but strong catches.

We'll see...

Up to you now to speak about your horological year!

Best,

Nicolas.

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.

rediscovered goodies, and the beloved old faithfuls also got their well deserved services. What's more, you have even successfully converted a female colleague into a watch aficionado. And what a beautiful collection she has got! She might be a newcomer, but with her distinguished taste and a seasoned "Vladdy" colleague like you, I am really looking forward to seeing what kind of horological year it will be for her in 2016! Best, Luis

I am very happy to have done what I did, this year, and to have discovered or re discovered all these beauties. But the funniest thing is to have poisoned my colleague and partner... It is very exciting to help someone, more specially a friend, to build her / his collection. Best, and thanks for reading, Luis. Nicolas

And all the watches coming out of service will give you lots of pleasure in the years to come! As for your choices of great watches of the year, spectacular without exception. Only managed to handle the RG Triple Bridge GP but based on that experience the black must be otherworldly. Already wrote about my 2015 in a separate post and vowed not to make any further purchases in the rest Next year anticipate something German or Austrian, or both, and probably another vintage piece for myself. It is not a bad experience, at the contrary. It is extremely rewarding to get a long hunted piece. Or to better know the watch you are after. German watches? I have two: G.O Senator for Rimowa, and Lange 1815 Moonphase Pt. I had a bit more, but alas... My favorite addition of the year? Let me think about it... I will tell later; Best, Nicolas
