GreatPilot@me.com, a seasoned collector, shares his contemplation of acquiring a unique Armin Strom timepiece featuring a rose gold case and a custom Kari Voutilainen white enamel dial. His post delves into the complex decision-making process for high-end independent watches, weighing the allure of bespoke craftsmanship and innovative movements against concerns about market presence and potential value depreciation. This discussion offers valuable insights into the collector's mindset when considering niche independent brands.

Hi again everyone and thanks to everyone for the help on my Armin Strom choices.  I believe I have found the watch I want and wanted to post it for you comments.  It is rose gold with a custom Kari white enamel solid rose gold dial.  I will receive the Watch on Tuesday and have the chance to try it on for Fit and looks before I wire the money, The dealer has been very accommodating in that way. The question I have is about the watch brand in general, Armin Strong does not seem to have a strong presence in the market and I’m a little afraid I may have a fleeting love affair with this watch and be stuck with it possibly losing good money and I do have the new FP Journe Resonance on order.  I have researched everywhere but cannot get a handle on the value proposition and since I have a lot of very nice watches I always try to buy ones that I will wear and be keepers.

I am getting a considerable discount off of retail but that may be because they are hard to sell. That being said, the unique resonance movement, the custom dial and the philosophy of the company making 95% of the parts in house is compelling to me.  I know the saying “buy what you love“ but affirmation is always nice and I appreciate any comments that you can give… Jim

About the F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance Ref. resonance

The Chronomètre à Résonance represents F.P. Journe's entry in the Souveraine collection, distinguished by its resonance complication. This reference utilizes the principle of resonance between two independent escapements to enhance chronometric precision.

The 40mm case is crafted in 18k rose gold with a fixed bezel and sapphire crystal. The silver dial houses the manual-winding caliber 1499 movement, offering a 42-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters, and the watch is completed with a leather strap.

This reference appeals to collectors focused on haute horlogerie complications and independent watchmaking. The resonance mechanism positions this piece as a technical showcase within F.P. Journe's manual-winding offerings. Production began in 2000, establishing this as part of the brand's contemporary catalog for collectors seeking advanced chronometric functions.

But be prepared to lose another 50% of what is already discounted, sorry but it’s the truth in this market and for me as a worker bee, I cannot justify love with the loss, should one day I need to trade it. Good for you if you can stomach it....it’s a great watch with mesmerizing looks and looking at videos, it’s very satisfying. Again, I’m clueless so take it with a grain of salt

Being very familiar with your collection, you have many LESS exciting watches in your collection which cost you a lot MORE money. Most of the safe purchases you made you have moved away from, trading them for far more original and creative timepieces which in my view is a great thing. When we see each other, I can literally see the difference in your personality when you come over wearing a splashy Indy versus what of your staid watches from a safety brand. Regardless of brand perception or valu

I'm sure the value proposition is great compared to other brands, but resale might take a hit due to the low visibility of the brand. You're getting a unique complication that required significant R&D to develop, good finishing front and back, and an enamel Kari dial. The main question would be if you like the way it looks on your wrist. If so, go for it!

I know it can be a expensive hobby . I try to be selective when purchasing a watch because i know i will keep it for a long time and enjoy it to the max , thats the best way to justify all the money I spent. I would say if your not thinking of selling this beautiful Armin S quickly then go for it and enjoy it as much as possible

Given this, I really think that deciding which of the two should prevail in making this decision is entirely up to you... The only unknown that remains is how the watch will feel on your wrist on Tuesday: will something "click" strongly enough when you try it on? Keep us posted, and good luck! ;-)

Armin Strom, just be verrrry certain you LOVE this watch or any by AS.... otherwise yes, own what you love. But if this is a 'maybe' in your mind or a choice based on a moment's passion, I would advise, wait 2-4 weeks... Just let it simmer... be SURE you want this one... Armin Strom, my guess is, will have a deflation of value in the 70-90% range... if you can ever resell it at all... apologize for the crudeness of this assessment... but you MUST LOVE it. This is NOT to say that an Armin Strom w
