India Whiskey Charlie initiates a compelling horological debate, pitting two distinct interpretations of the jumping hour complication against each other: the Audemars Piguet Neo Frame Jumping Hour and the Cartier Tank À Guichets. This comparison delves into how each brand approaches a shared concept with vastly different design and historical philosophies. Readers are invited to consider not just aesthetics, but also the underlying horological commitments and historical contexts that define these unique timepieces.

Same concept, different executions.  Vote for the one you'd choose:

About the Audemars Piguet Edward Piguet Jumping Hour Ref. 26085OR.OO.D002CR.01

The Edward Piguet collection represents Audemars Piguet's exploration of rectangular case forms, departing from the brand's iconic octagonal Royal Oak silhouette. Named after Edward Auguste Piguet, one of the company's founding fathers, this collection emerged as AP's answer to the resurgent interest in dress watches during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The jumping hour complication within this series showcases the manufacture's commitment to haute horlogerie complications even within their more classically proportioned timepieces.

The technical execution of the jumping hour mechanism requires precise energy management to ensure the hour display advances instantaneously at each hour mark while maintaining consistent power delivery to the minute display. The caliber features a distinctive fan-shaped retrograde minute counter that sweeps across the lower portion of the dial before snapping back to zero at the hour change. This instantaneous jump requires careful regulation of the gear train and represents a fascinating intersection of mechanical complexity and visual drama within the confines of a relatively compact rectangular case.

Production numbers for the Edward Piguet Jumping Hour remained deliberately limited, making examples increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate both horological complications and AP's design diversity beyond the Royal Oak family. The rose gold case and black dial combination shown here represents the most classic execution of this reference, though the model appeared in various precious metal configurations during its production run. Current market values reflect both the technical sophistication and relative scarcity of this complication within Audemars Piguet's contemporary catalog.

I would choose the Cartier

as it would fit my wrist and probably most wrists better. Saying that if I had a large wrist, I would choose the AP which has the better movement and the case is also less susceptible to scratches.

I think AP did a great job in case and dial configuration AP for me

I prefer the Cartier, I find it more consistent.

Cartier seems more wearable. But really, I’d not choose either.

Tank for me…

The AP has been made so large it would be far from a comfortable fit on my wrist 🤷🏻‍♂️ Like the idea and that they did it but the size doesn’t work for me…

I have seen neither in person, so I'll hold my judgement.

But, based on photos, I like the Cartier better (and it saddens me, because I would love to love the Neo Frame). Best, Emmanuel
