dxboon initiates a community discussion on 'dream APs,' inviting collectors to share their ultimate Audemars Piguet grail watches. He kicks off the conversation by detailing his personal dream: a skeletonized Jules Audemars minute repeater with jump hour and small seconds, praising its movement depth, finishing, legibility, and the 'ding dong' factor of its minute repeater complication.

Let's talk about our dream APs.  While I love my 15300 to death, and am super satisfied with it, that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to own other APs!  smile

If money were no object, which AP would you choose to add to your collection?

It's so hard for me to narrow it down to just ONE dream AP.  I have a soft spot for the unique Edward Piguet tourbillons that have mainplates made from rock crystal or stone.  I also really like the Jules Audemars Chronap for its escapement and very cool dial layout.  Those pieces would definitely be contenders for grail AP status.

However, if I had to choose one today, I think I'd go with the skeletonized Jules Audemars minute repeater with jump hour and small seconds.  First, I really appreciate the depth and construction of the movement when viewed from both the dial side and verso.  Finishing is, of course, very high (this is AP we are discussing).  The jump seconds is my favorite complication, so it stands to reason that a jump hour would be mighty enjoyable also.  Unlike so many other skeleton watches, this AP is perfectly legible.  Telling time is a breeze for the most part -- yes, there is that section between 55 minutes and 5 minutes where the railroad tracks are obscured by the words "Audemars Piguet," but for the most part the watch is very readable.  Then, there is the "ding dong" factor -- it's a MINUTE REPEATER!  smile  Anyone who owns, or has played around with minute repeaters, can attest to the sheer joy that comes from interacting with a watch that makes noise!  smile

Alright, I've shared my dreams.  How about all of you?

About the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Ref. 15300

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak reference 15300 represents a significant evolution within the Royal Oak lineage, succeeding the 15202 "Jumbo" and preceding the 15400. It introduced a slightly more robust case and an in-house movement, distinguishing it from earlier models that often utilized Jaeger-LeCoultre base calibers. This reference maintained the classic Gérald Genta-designed aesthetic while offering a contemporary update in terms of its mechanical heart and wearability for a broader audience. It is often considered a transitional reference, bridging the gap between vintage and modern Royal Oak interpretations.

This reference features a 39 mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 9.4 mm, maintaining the characteristic octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws. The watch is powered by the in-house Audemars Piguet Caliber 3120, an automatic movement known for its robust construction and a power reserve of 60 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, and the watch offers a water resistance of 50 meters. The integrated stainless steel bracelet is a hallmark of the Royal Oak design, ensuring a cohesive and comfortable fit.

For collectors, the 15300 is appealing due to its balanced proportions, which are often preferred over the larger 41 mm cases of subsequent references. Its in-house movement also adds to its desirability, marking a period of increased manufacturing independence for Audemars Piguet. The reference was produced with various dial colors, including blue, black, and white, offering collectors choices within this specific model run. The production period from 2005 to 2012 makes it a neo-vintage piece with a distinct place in the Royal Oak's history.

RO Skeleton QP is very nice. I was not fully convinced by pictures, but in person -- WOW! The question is steel or platinum, really! I prefer the white metals over the yellow or rose gold for this model. xoxoxo, Daos

...the BOMB! :-) I cannot even imagine having a watch with a chrono, perpetual calendar, and repeater all-in-one. :-) The only misgiving I have about this piece, and it's understandable from a design perspective, is the size (44mm, I believe). For me, the 39mm RO case is delectable; perfection. Cheers, Daos
