Ubik's report from a special Baselworld preview event in London's West End offers a unique glimpse into the 2013 novelties. This article captures the excitement of handling new releases in an intimate setting, providing a valuable historical record for collectors interested in how these watches were first introduced to the community. Ubik, a self-professed vintage enthusiast, shares his candid impressions, highlighting the enduring appeal of both new and classic designs.

A couple of weeks ago, myself and a number of Purists (including a freshly inaugurated Moderator) were kindly invited to a taster of some of the new watches shown at Basel this year.

Although a vintage man myself, I make it a point of principle never to pass up a cocktail or a chance to mingle with Purists in the company of watches handled
with the finest hands in white gloves.

Here, in no specific order, are some pictures I took of the event.

This way sir.

Right. Suitably fortified it's time to enter.

The event was housed in a converted Dairy, which made for a spectacular space.

A few Purists, before the wandering begins.

Enough of this messing around. Let's get started.

Straight to the good stuff.

As I'm wandering around I see an interesting tray, with a vintage theme!

See if there's anything I might like to try on?

Oh go on then.

I'll just slip into this then.

No time to dawdle. When I bump into Mandy. Where else!

Perhaps I can tempt you with something a little more dressy.

Well - if you twist my wrist.

Many admirers for this classic looking JLC.

Now let's see what this newcomer has to offer.

Speechless. I think I need another drink.

OK this one is more my speed.

... catch my breath and onto another house.

Ahh the Portuguese, I do have a weakness for these.

More to come in Part two.

A few final places to visit on this outing. A brand that needs no introduction. The Bullhead. A classic Seventies design. Back in black. A fellow Purist shows something he brough himself - model's own. It's starting to get busy in here. Time to retreat to a quiet area in back. You may have heard of this manufacturer. Perhaps I could interest you in something for the weekend sir? Cash or plastic sir? Thanks to our hosts at Watches of Switzerland.
