The dial is inspired by NASA’s “Black Marble”, a nocturnal vision of the Earth.

It features two superimposed levels

1) On the one hand, a gold base dial, decorated with a gradation from sky blue to navy blue which is finely handmade guillochĂ© with meridians and parallels. It is flat, yet offers the trompe-l’oeil of a truly curved Earth.

2) The guillochĂ© dial is capped with a translucent sapphire crystal entirely hand-painted in three phases:

  • First, all the continents are painted in an inverted mirror on the reverse side of the sapphire crystal in miniature enamel.
  • Secondly, a series of clouds are painted in enamel on the front, each painter being free to follow his personal inspiration. Each of the 50 pieces will therefore be unique.
  • Thirdly, the cities that light up at night are also represented with a miniature phosphorescent enamel painting.

By opting for a night view, the Hora Mundi 5555 is meant to celebrate a world in motion, where city lights remind us that the Earth never sleeps: a fitting nod for a watch designed for people traveling frequently.

Moreover, each of the 50 collectors will be able to personalise the cities assigned to the 24 time zones.

The 43.9 x 13.8 mm case is made of Breguet gold, with a 24 mm lug width.

The heart of the Hora Mundi 5555 is the 77F1 calibre. This movement has powered the Hora Mundi collection since its creation (calibre 77F0 became 77F1 in 2022).

In addition to the time and date, it indicates a second time and date pair for the time zone of one’s choice, based on one of the 24 cities each representing a time zone.

The three position crown at 3 o'clock winds the watch and sets both the time and date.

The second crown at 8 o’clock adjusts the time zone, with the hands, day/night indicator, and date changing in real time as you cycle through cities in the window at six.

Pressing this second crown instantly switches to another, pre-set time zone.

The movement is finished to industrial fine watchmaking standards, with a nautically themed Breguet gold rotor. The frequency is 28,800 beats per hours (4 Hz).

About the Breguet Ref. 250thAnniversary

The Breguet 250th Anniversary reference commemorates the birth year of Abraham-Louis Breguet. This limited edition series was introduced to honor the founder's legacy and the brand's heritage of horological innovation. It represents a significant commemorative release, often featuring design elements that pay homage to historical Breguet timepieces, distinguishing it from standard production models through its specific aesthetic and limited availability. These anniversary editions are typically sought after for their historical context and the craftsmanship associated with special Breguet releases.

This particular reference features a round case, often crafted from precious metals, housing a finely finished mechanical movement. The case diameter is typically in a classic size, suitable for a dress watch. The crystal protecting the dial is sapphire, providing clarity and scratch resistance. The movement within is a testament to Breguet's traditional watchmaking, offering a power reserve consistent with high-quality mechanical calibers.

Collectors are drawn to the 250th Anniversary edition for its direct connection to the brand's origins and its status as a special commemorative piece. It appeals to those who appreciate historical significance and limited production runs. The watch fits into the broader Breguet catalog as a tribute piece, distinct from the brand's contemporary collections, and often serves as a focal point for collectors interested in the brand's heritage and special editions.

I was invited last month at the Bréguet Boutique at New Bond Street (London) and we had the privilege of chatting with the enamel artist who makes these fantastic dials, true handmade works of art. It’s was such a unique experience many thanks to Ahmed the boutique manager for the invitation. I will also post another thread about the piece de souscription that was on display there.

But the dial seems very impressive, here. And for whatever reason I've got a soft spot for the Marine line and think it deserves more credit than it does. Best, Emmanuel

The dial is just incredible with so much fine detail and craftsmanship involved in its making I think the fact a lucky owner can choose the cities he wants is also a great idea. I really think this watch is all about the dial and they should have fitted a closed case back as there really is not much to see of the movement. Marc
