I have been having some fun comparing/contrasting two L.U.C models, the 16/1860 with its caliber 1.96, and the Tech QF with its 9.96.  Both are examples of the fine work Chopard is doing with L.U.C.

These two are, at first glance, drastically different -- different metals, of course, and the QF case is a couple of millimeters larger. The Tech QF follows Chopard's "tech" design aesthetic, with raised arabic numerals and a dial that exposes the bottom plate of the movement.

Both are three hand watches with a subdial at 6:00.

But the subdial of the 16/1860 is encroached upon by the date window, while the Tech QF has no date complication.  The seconds subdial of the Tech QF is somewhat higher on the dial, such that it's perimeter intersects the the axis of the hands.

The crowns are similar, though the Tech QF crown is a bit larger.  Both feel nice to wind, with no resistance, though both movements are, of course, automatic.

Lugs are quite different.  The QF lugs are welded I believe, and quite sleek, while those of the 16/1860 are integrated into the case.

Turn these watches over, though, and the real strength of L.U.C is abundantly clear.  The caliber 1.96 are exquisitely finished micro-rotor automatic movements, and they are very, very similar, though the former bears the Geneva Seal and latter the Qualite Fleurier certification. The 1.96 includes a swans neck regulator, the 9.96 does not, but the finish on both is of the same, lofty standard.

I am enamored of both of these watches for their beauty, one a classic all around, the other a bold mix of classic and avant guard design elements.  Underpinning my fascination with these watches, and with L.U.C in general, is Chopard itself.  I truly admire what this independent, family-owned manufacture stands for -- self sufficiency, integrity, elegant beauty, and a quest for unquestionable quality in design and execution.  I would argue they have achieved that quest. When he first embarked upon creating L.U.C, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele commented that he saw its development and evolution as a marathon and not a sprint. If they follow the path they are on, and there is no reason to doubt that they will, they are poised, I believe, for nothing short of transcendent beauty and innovation. I'm truly excited to see what comes next.

Best,

... so many family similarities. They make a great pair in your Chopard collection. The movements look fantastic and the high level of finish is obvious. And I agree with you about the achievements of the company. Chopard just get better and better. Great to watch. Andr

I so admire the 16/1860 that I am tempted to go after examples in other metals. I am particularly fond of the white gold case with salmon dial. (A certain PPro moderator has conditioned me toward that combination!) But I hesitate to do that because I don't want to leave the coffers bare for new models! Best, CaliforniaJed
