In a delightful post, baldywatchman shares his renewed appreciation for two modern classics: the original Audi TT Mark 1 and his F.P. Journe Chronomètre Optimum. His reflection on the pure joy these objects bring invites readers to consider the enduring appeal of design and craftsmanship, prompting a discussion on what makes a 'classic' in both horology and automotive design.

The F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain represents the foundational timepiece within the brand's Souveraine collection. This reference demonstrates the manufacture's approach to precision timekeeping through manual winding mechanics, positioned as a core offering in F.P. Journe's lineup.
The 40mm case is executed in 18k rose gold with a fixed bezel configuration. A sapphire crystal protects the silver dial, while the manual-winding caliber 1304 movement provides an 80-hour power reserve. The timepiece features 30-meter water resistance and is paired with a leather strap. Production commenced in 2000.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking F.P. Journe's mechanical execution in a fundamental three-hand configuration. The substantial power reserve and manual winding caliber position this model for enthusiasts who appreciate traditional watchmaking approaches within the Souveraine series framework.
To me, the optimum is the best Journe ever! Enjoy them both, my friend Hussam
I was a teenager when that first TT came out and there has never been--in truth there will never be--a car I've lusted for more than I lusted for that one. (LOVE the watch, too! That's the 40mm Optimum, right?)
The FPJ is such a stellar timepiece. It looks great on your wrist!
I vividly remember the first one and where I used to see it regularly. At the time a friend had the Z3 roaster, a fantastic car of the same era. But the TT was always my choice (if I would have had one at that time). I eventually owned one closer to the end of the production for the 1st generation. You make me think that I should try and find one again, although I’m also very much drawn to finding a Golf GTI (Mark 5 or 6) from around the same time. Nice watch too !
Just might be my favorite at the moment, that strap you have on it is sublime 👌 Mine says hello
I can’t stop staring at it, I need to get one!
