Emcquillan seeks community input on a challenging decision: choosing between two platinum F.P. Journe chronometers, the Optimum and the Centigraphe, both with grey dials. This post delves into the nuanced considerations collectors face when selecting between a time-only chronometer and a unique chronograph from a revered independent watchmaker.

and your choices were platinum, grey dial Optimum or platinum grey dial Centigraphe, which would you choose? Exquisite time only chronometer or superbly unique chronograph?

I tried on the 42mm Optimum today and the 40mm would fit much nicer. The case was surprisingly comfortable due to the curved lugs and relative thinness.

About the F.P. Journe Centigraphe Souverain Ref. centigraphe

The F.P. Journe Centigraphe Souverain represents the brand s approach to chronograph complications within the Souverain collection. This reference features the specialized caliber 1506 movement and carries the distinctive Centigraphe designation, positioning it as F.P. Journe s chronograph offering in their manual-winding lineup.

The 40mm case is crafted from 18k rose gold and fitted with a sapphire crystal. The silver dial provides the backdrop for the chronograph functions. The manual-winding caliber 1506 movement delivers an 80-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters, and the watch is completed with a leather strap. The fixed bezel maintains clean proportions around the case perimeter.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking F.P. Journe s interpretation of chronograph mechanics in precious metal construction. Production began in 2007, establishing this as part of the contemporary F.P. Journe catalog. The Centigraphe attracts those interested in independent watchmaking combined with traditional manual-winding chronograph complications, offering substantial power reserve within the 40mm rose gold case format.

I dont know if you already know. But the Centigraphe was discontinued the end of last year. So that would probably be last call if you want to buy it new. I am a huge fan of that watch. I find it both beautiful, a higly original take on a chronograph and also importantly - playfull and charming. The Optimum is a very important watch for FPJ. In my personal opinion, it could become a great classic. It combines aspects of watchmaking that have been essential to Journe, in trying to achieve the bes

I didn’t know that the centigraphe was going to be discontinued. That makes a possible decision even more difficult.

That wasn’t what I intended. It has already been discontinued , but it will continue as the the Centigraphe II, in the Sport collection. You can see it on the website. We have an other moderator here on the forum, who always says get both! ;-) I’m quite serious when I’m saying that, either way, is great! Maybe you need to try them both on again - that sometimes helps. Are You more a Chronometry guy than a Chronograph guy? Or vice versa.? Personally, I would be on the fence too.
