Friends,
I promised a closer look at the GP 1966 Full Calendar with Moon-phase, reference 49535.

To me, the GP 1966 represent the ultra-classic in a modern version. The general shape and design you are familiar with from many other watches, but what makes the GP 1966 stand out from the crowd is how GP managed to keep the perfect proportions in a bigger modern size case.

Often we see classic watches enlarged to 39 – 42 mm to follow today’s fashion. Many of them was originally designed for a smaller case size, 35 – 37 mm and then enlarged in diameter without making the watch thicker.

On an Ultrathin watch that is OK, hence the purpose of the complication is to make the movement as thin as possible. But on a non-UT watch the proportions often comes out a bit off balance, IMO.
A watch with a diameter of 40 mm often looks a bit thin if it is 7 – 8 mm thick, while the same watch with a thickness of 10.70 mm gives the watch good proportions.
Same goes the other way as well, thicker watch needs a bigger diameter. Will give you an example in a separate post soon…
Again, all this is of course a matter of taste…

Another thing that not only makes the 1966 look like an elegant watch but also feel like an elegant watch is the lugs. The short and curved lugs that “hugs” the wrist in a very pleasant way makes the watch still feel classic elegant watch and not as a large watch.
It wears smaller than it looks!
The white gold case gives the watch a very nice hue and gives it a nice solid weight; the presence on the wrist is perfect!

The white gold leaf hands and applied index gives the dial a very sober look. The blued central second hand and date hand adds the exclusive feel to the watch…
The light blue weekday and month indicator stands out just enough together with the 31 on the date circle.
Only think I would improve on the dial is the size of the moon-phase window, which I think could have been made a tad larger and of course, the “Automatic” text that I feel is redundant…

Talk about automatic, inside is the GP 03300 automatic caliber, 28800 vph, 27 jewels.
The watch has a power reserve of 46 hours and is water resistant down to 30 m / 3 ATM.
Functions: Hour, minute, full calendar with date, day of the week, month and moon-phase and central second.

To me this is as close to perfect modern Triple date with Moon-phase watch there is right now on the market!

Looking forward to your thoughts….
Best

Sober handsome elegant very nice Thnx for keeping fireplace so hot Yours D
Those three words sums the watch perfectly, my friend! :) Hope to get some new material soon to heat up this place... ;) Best, my friend Blomman
This one doesn't escape to the rule. A very nice case, too. One small thing: I would have preferred, as often a solid case back. Best, Nicolas
But in this case I think it works very well with open case back. Or to put it in other words - nothing I reflected would have improved this watch for me. Best, my friend Blomman
and I don't usually like display backs.
That puts some color to the back? Because I also like this one and also more of a solid case back guy...! Best Blomman
