In this insightful article, 'this_hobby_of_hours' delves into the rare and captivating Girard Perregaux Classique Elegance Carré Cambré Chronograph 2499. This piece is a deep dive into a neo-vintage gem, offering collectors and enthusiasts a detailed look at its unique design, limited production, and enduring appeal. The author's personal connection and detailed observations make this an essential read for anyone interested in Girard Perregaux's heritage and the allure of limited-edition chronographs from the early 2000s.

Friends,

Today we talk a bit about a watch that is close to my heart. The 38 mm Classique Elegance Carré Cambré Chronograph 2499. The Classique Elegance line was a series of different watches produce by Girard Perregaux from 1999 to 2005. Many different watches that paid tribute to classic GP watches from the past.

The cushion case were all in 38 mm and all were made in a very limited production. GP at this time was well known for small production numbers but the cushion cases were the most limited in production numbers.

There were four references:

1. 2598
2. 2498
3. 9012
4. 2499

The 2499 was the most limited production of the lot and released in 2003.
In silver dial 185 pieces made.
In black dial, 120 pieces made, of which 50 made with the Khanjar of Sultan of Oman.

The 2499 has no date and is a bi-compax chronograph. I find them to be perfectly balanced and the 38 mm with curved lugs to fit the wrist really well. The case is a complex one and the finishing is a mixture of satin and high polish. The bevels and of the shoulders transition to the lugs in an elegant fashion.

So you can see how rare these are and how sought after they are amongst GP neo-vintage collectors. They just don’t come up for sale very often and when they do, one has to look at the condition very closely.

The black dial is notoriously difficult to photograph well because of reflections. Both have the beautiful guilloche which transform the dials to various shades. The black dial often goes to a charcoal grey in the sun. Both have the red accents as was the style under the leadership of Luigi Macaluso at the time.

After the 2499, GP never again made a cushion case watch. It has been 20 years and I hope they will again come out with a cushion case. I think it will do well and give collectors another option to complement their laureato. Do you guys agree?

I had to attend some events today and I took some pics with the jacket and shirt on for a change from my usual t-shirt. ☺️

I hope you enjoy the pics. The videos can be found on my IG @quietluxurytime or the Laureato Fan Club Facebook group.

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 2499

The Patek Philippe Reference 2499 is a highly significant perpetual calendar chronograph, representing a pivotal model in the brand's history of complicated wristwatches. It succeeded the Reference 1518 and introduced a larger case diameter and updated aesthetic, establishing a design language that would influence subsequent perpetual calendar chronographs from Patek Philippe for decades. The reference was produced in four distinct series, each with subtle variations in dial layout, pusher style, and case construction.

This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, most commonly yellow gold, though examples in rose gold and platinum are known. The case diameter is generally 37.5mm, housing a manual-wind movement, specifically the caliber 13''' Q. This movement integrates a perpetual calendar mechanism with a chronograph function, offering indications for day, date, month, leap year, and moon phases. The crystal is typically acrylic for earlier series and sapphire for later iterations.

The 2499 is highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity, complexity, and historical importance. It is considered a benchmark for vintage complicated Patek Philippe watches and represents the evolution of the perpetual calendar chronograph from the mid-20th century. The variations between the four series provide distinct collecting opportunities, with each series possessing unique characteristics that appeal to different connoisseurs.

Is the movement the Caliber 3300 with Dubois Depraz module?

Last time I checked, there was no predetermined place the small seconds has to be. ☺️ I like the bracelet too. Thanks for your comment.

I like it on both strap and bracelet as it changes the entires look and feel of the watch. Strap more vintage and bracelet more modern. Stronger wrist presence. Also, always good to have the original bracelet as they can’t be bought any more. What do you think of the case size and symmetry to the lugs?

Actually not the 3300. This is using the ETA 2892A2 and it is modified and refinished by GP. Reliable and good quality. And easy to service. The 2892A2 is considered the top of the line for ETA. The GP caliber name is GP 022C0-Q0VSS 11.5”’ and yes a Dubois-Depraz Chronograph. Crisp chrono functions and reset. Winding is smooth. Thanks for your comment ☺️
