Crown comfort explores the subtle yet significant differences between two Girard Perregaux Art Deco dials, the Vintage 45 Ref. 2595/2593 (dial 773) and his Richeville (dial 703). His post delves into the aesthetic nuances of these white dials with Roman numerals and shares his personal journey of customizing a Richeville to better suit his taste.

I mentioned that I have done some shifting/changes to my collection over the summer. Mainly with some strap changes, but with one I went a bit further.

I want to come back to the white dial with Roman numerals from GP. Some time ago, I had posted the question on the early Vintage 45 (Ref 2595 or 2593) with Dial number 773. We determined that it is painted and not enamel.

Nevertheless, it is a very sensual dial with the timeless art deco design. Here is the catalogue photo from 1996 in a white gold case.

I actually own a very similar dial from the Richeville line, here it has dial number 703. Here is the photo of my Richeville dial.

Having a bicolor case makes the watch not so versatile and frankly, bicolor is not exactly my favourite, but totally in love with the art deco dial.

When comparing with Dial 773, there are only subtle differences. I prefer the square sub-seconds on dial 703 while the 773 dial has a nice touch of some red accents in the numbers.

The same 1996 catalogue shows the Richeville dial 703 in a solid yellow gold case as shown below.

Now I have been thinking how I can get out of the bicolor dilemma of this lovely watch. For a while I have been searching for a Richeville 2520 in yellow gold case, but honesty a white metal I would much prefer.

Last months I had an opportunity to acquire another Richeville 2520 in steel. And I decided to do the following.

I had swapped the case of the bicolor to the steel case. Arguably this is tempering with originality, but the result in my opinion is what counts.

What a classic look and now I can wear it more often without the gold bezel.

Now just adding a new old stock blue strap (yes it is slightly blue) and happy days!

About the Girard-Perregaux Richeville Ref. 2520

The Richeville reference 2520 is a distinctive tonneau-shaped timepiece from Girard-Perregaux, known for its curved case design that conforms to the wrist. This reference is part of a collection that offered various dial configurations and materials, appealing to collectors seeking a blend of classic watchmaking with a unique aesthetic. It represents a period where Girard-Perregaux explored different forms beyond traditional round cases, establishing the Richeville as a recognizable line within their catalog.

This particular reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, housing an automatic movement. The curved sapphire crystal complements the tonneau shape, providing clear visibility of the dial. While specific dimensions can vary slightly across Richeville models, the 2520 maintains a balanced proportion suitable for daily wear. The movement is designed to offer reliable timekeeping with a practical power reserve.

Collectors are drawn to the Richeville 2520 for its elegant form factor and the variety of dial executions, including options with Roman or Arabic numerals, and different color schemes. The ability to customize or change dial configurations, as noted by collectors, adds an interesting layer to its history and collectibility. It appeals to those who appreciate watches with a strong design identity and a departure from more common case shapes, making it a notable piece in the brand's modern history.

To say all, I much prefer the all stainless steel version you just found.

More modern, cleaner, more sober... In my book, more appealing. ;) Best, Nicolas
