Cookies initiates a thought-provoking discussion about his evolving relationship with Grand Seiko, questioning whether the brand, despite its undeniable quality, lacks a certain 'oomph' or originality. He invites the community to explore his feelings about design similarities, marketing strategies, and the proliferation of limited editions.

Grand Seiko is a little of an oddball in my hobby. It is very well made, buttery and luxuriously finished. The chronometric performance is world-class - more accurate than my other pieces (I like to set my watches to atomic time, and compare the deviations after a day).

But there is just something lacking in it which, I cannot put an exact reason to, quite yet. Maybe someone can help me.

I’m an outlier, so I must be the only one feeling this.

Is it the Ooomph? Yes I think so.

Is it the copycat syndrome (where many designs looks similar to Swiss icons)? Yes

(at least, match the water resistance to the Deepsea, which they did not do for such a massive looking piece)

Is it the multitudes of LE, when instead, they could have introduced new technology? Maybe, just maybe.

Is it the dilution caused by the sister subsidiaries (Seiko Prospex, Credor, Seiko Presage)? Very likely

I would want to like this offshoot even more, but it seems I’ve reached the dead-end of this relationship I really tried my best in.

The romance is no more, not until I hear of technology, originality, and better make-up (enamel dials like those on Patek or even Ulysse Nardin). I will pay for it of course!

But, some partners will never change. They are stubborn to their ways till the very end. And they’d find partners to suit them better.

It kinda reminds me of my first girlfriend - she was great, good hearted and pretty and smart, but, but, but...just too boring for me.

My first and likely my last GS.

About the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Ref. 116600

The Sea-Dweller reference 116600 marked the return of the 40mm case size for the model, a dimension that had been absent from the Sea-Dweller lineup for some time. This reference reintroduced several classic Sea-Dweller design elements, distinguishing it from its larger contemporary, the Sea-Dweller 4000. It was produced for a relatively short period, making it a notable transitional model within the brand's professional tool watch offerings.

This reference features a stainless steel case measuring 40mm in diameter and 15.3mm in thickness. It is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel made of black ceramic with a 60-minute graduation. The watch is powered by the automatic caliber 3135, offering a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the black dial, which includes a date complication without the cyclops lens, a characteristic feature of the Sea-Dweller line.

Appealing to collectors who appreciate traditional proportions and the technical capabilities of a professional dive watch, the 116600 is recognized for its blend of heritage design and modern materials. Its limited production run contributes to its appeal among enthusiasts seeking a Sea-Dweller with a more classic case size and specific aesthetic details, such as the matte-like black dial and the absence of the cyclops over the date.

To a great brand, that only now starts to come up on collectors' radars. I agree on some of your points, but not on "lacks new technology" - sorry but they launched a new escapement credit - professionalwatches

That you did not take its artistically crafted dial into account

Like the plumage of the peacock. They can make beautiful things I believe in enameI, and maki-e and even porcelain. Japan has many artistic techniques unique to them such as porcelain, maki-e, raden mother-of-pearl etc. I hope for more..not in numbers or more releases but in something which will mezmerise me once again. My autumn dial says hi. He met the GS diver and told me that he didn’t like it that his big brother looks like he is copying someone.

She could only wear certain brands. If she wore a GS, it would not look matching to her sexy appeal.

Is the impact of marketing. Right now it's all about sport watches that are meant to handle anything and be tools to go with you on adventures. That and simply celebrity brand ambassadors, While we know this - I think we still don't truly appreciate how much it shapes our image of the brand and impacts our emotional connection to the brand and accordingly its watches. Look at GS, everything, down to the watch catalogues are extremely conservative - servicing every 3 years, avoid knocks to watch,
