Hermes Kelly Sellier vs. Rolex Daytona Steel

Well these two items may seem to be miles apart, a hand bag vs a watch, but they share many similarities. 

They are both made by highly experienced craftsmen that required years of apprenticeship and experience.  The Hermes Kelly bag takes approximately 18 hours to make.  I suspect that a Rolex Daytona probably takes about the same time to assemble though I have no facts to support the build time but an educated guess you could say.  Some of the peculiarity of the Kelly Sellier bag is that the stitching is exposed vs the “retourne” bags made by Hermes are sewn on the outside the bag is flip inside out creating a hidden seam.  With the stitching exposed much more attention is required to details not unlike the finish of a watch with a display back – you can’t hide the faults. 

Both Hermes and Rolex obviously source the highest quality materials for their products.  I would image there may even be an interview process for the hides to make sure they are of the best caliber and fluent in several languages. 

Finally and most important is the fact that they are extremely hard to find at the retail level.  We all here about how hard it is to get a Steel Rolex Daytona without some special favors as they are always in short supply and waiting lists are always long.  I realize that over the years it may have gotten a little easier to find the Steel Rolex Daytona but I think most that have tried did find it to be a tall order.  With the Hermes Kelly Sellier bag it is even in much shorter supply and the waiting list is longer than your arm.  I would venture to say that the Kelly Sellier may fabricated more so in dozens that hundreds per year.  You won’t find them sitting on the shelves at even the Flagship stores in Paris or Beverly Hills.  You definitely won’t find it on their web site.  As with Rolex you need to be extremely careful that you buy from the AD as you will not be sure to have the genuine item.  Like the Rolex Daytona Steel you can expect to pay higher than retail if you were to find a genuine one in the wild and the aftermarket for the vintage models of both Rolex Daytona and the Hermes Kelly Sellier are very strong.  There are dedicated forums for the Kelly and the bags grace the arms of the stars across the world – that is both the Kelly bag and the Rolex Daytona.  And the price points are very similar. Both are collector items.

You may be asking where did the name of the bag come from.  Apparently it was coined the Kelly after the fact when Grace Kelly was seen sporting one of these lovely bags and hence the name Kelly.  The other Hermes model is the Birkin for a slightly less rigid presentation softer styled “Retoune”.  Please don’t get me wrong I am not looking for a manbag I just found the parallels between these two items to be very interesting.  If you are looking for nice Christmas presents I would not hold your breath.
