Brandon Skinner, a seasoned collector, shares his enduring love-hate relationship with the IWC Big Pilot, a watch he finds both iconic and absurdly proportioned. His candid reflection invites readers to consider the emotional and aesthetic complexities of owning such a distinctive timepiece. Skinner's personal journey with multiple Big Pilot references, including a 55mm model, highlights the often irrational yet deeply personal connection collectors form with their watches.

To date I've had 4 Big Pilots and have a serious love/hate relationship with them. I love them because I find them gorgeous and iconic. I hate them because on any given day I find the proportions absolutely absurd. Below is my latest.

Most of the time I'll see this watch in my box and think "I should trade this for something else", but if I catch myself on the right day I strap it on and it puts the biggest smile on my face.

For the fun of it, here are some of my other pilot watches

Last is a watch with even more absurd proportions at 55mm, however since I never really considered wearing it in the first place somehow my brain can reconcile owning it with out any thought of selling letting it go. It makes no sense, I know!🤦‍♂️

Anyone else have a watch which plays such mental tricks on you?

There is one in the CM that has caught my attention. I never liked the crown, but lately it has grown on me. Did you always like it? Seems like it’s way easy to wind though, there is just something about it, maybe too big in pictures?? Nice collection

If you like the design of the Big Pilot but find it too unwieldy, try getting an IWC UTC 3251 from the late 90’s / early 2000’s. It’s got a lot of the same visual elements, in a 39mm x 12.5mm package that’s a joy to wear. Useful complication, too.

The Mojave, Heritage & Bronze all have elements I appreciate but the 46mm size is a problem, I recently bought a 44mm Panerai which is probably my threshold but I'll need to try one a Big Pilot to really know for sure, perhaps the natural darkening of the bronze might help with the optics...

www.iwc.com I think this size could suit most people who find the 46 too big and bulky...

I just gifted my son in law my 5002 as him and my daughter gifted me with my 2nd grandchild. I still have the “Safari” variant and the BP 43.
