India Whiskey Charlie's original post introduces the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 35, a significant expansion of the Ingenieur collection that revisits Gérald Genta's iconic design in a more compact form. This article delves into the details of this new 35mm model, exploring its design nuances, movement, and how it addresses evolving collector preferences for smaller case sizes. India Whiskey Charlie provides a comprehensive overview of the new references, highlighting their enhanced ergonomics and high-end finishing.

Schaffhausen/Geneva, 1st April 2025: IWC Schaffhausen launches the Ingenieur Automatic 35 at Watches and Wonders Geneva. With this new automatic model, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer complements its Ingenieur collection with three 35-millimetre versions. One model is crafted from 18-carat 5N gold featuring a gold-coloured dial, while two come in stainless steel with either a black or a silver-plated dial. The new Ingenieur Automatic 35 offers the same enhanced ergonomics and highly detailed finishing as the 40-millimetre version.

In 2023, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Ingenieur Automatic 40; a luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet revisiting the emblematic design of GĂ©rald Genta’s Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, from the 1970s. This year, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer extends the collection with the Ingenieur Automatic 35. This new and more compact automatic model has a case diameter of 35 millimetres and a thickness of just 9.44 millimetres.

The Ingenieur Automatic 35 is available in three versions. One model features an 18-carat 5N gold case and bracelet, completed with a gold-coloured dial (Ref. IW324903). Two models feature a stainless steel case and bracelet. The first one has a silver-plated dial (Ref. IW324901), the second one a black dial (Ref. IW324906).

ENHANCED ERGONOMICS AND HIGH-END FINISHING

Despite its more compact size, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 features all the characteristic design cues of the IWC Ingenieur. Among these are the bezel with five functional screws, the integrated bracelet attaching via its middle links and the “Grid” dial with applied indices. Designers and engineers worked hand-in-hand to define, proportion and finish every part and characteristic of the Ingenieur faithfully to a 35-millimetre case size. The result offers the instantly recognisable look and feel of the Ingenieur in a smaller and flatter execution with perfect ergonomics and wearing comfort.

Just as the 40-millimetre version, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 impresses with its highly detailed finishing. The three new models are finished with a combination of satinf inished and polished surfaces, adding texture and reflecting the light beautifully. Secured to the case ring with five functional screws, the bezel is satin-finished with a polished outer edge. The H-links of the bracelet are also satin-finished with polished edges, while the centre links and case back are fully polished.

CHARACTERISTIC DIAL WITH “GRID” STRUCTURE

A hallmark feature of the Ingenieur Automatic 35 is its elaborately crafted dial. It features the characteristic “Grid” pattern, consisting of small lines and squares. Another detail is the intricate framing of the date window. The appliques on all three models are individually mounted by hand and filled with Super-LumiNova®. While the 18-carat 5N gold version features solid gold appliques and gold-plated hands, the two stainless steel models boast steel appliques and rhodium-plated hands.

SEE-THROUGH SAPPHIRE GLASS CASE BACK

All three versions of the Ingenieur Automatic 35 have been equipped with open case backs showcasing the 47110 calibre with automatic winding and a power reserve of 42 hours. The movement is finished with circular graining and Geneva stripes and features a gold-plated oscillating weight.

About the IWC Mark XI Ref. 1832

The IWC Mark XI reference 1832 represents the brand's approach to aviation-styled timepieces within the Mark series lineup. This reference features a black dial configuration in a 36mm case format, positioning it as a mid-sized option within IWC's portfolio.

The watch employs a 36mm stainless steel case fitted with an acrylic crystal and offers 50 meters of water resistance. A fixed bezel frames the black dial. The timepiece operates via a manual-winding movement, requiring regular winding to maintain operation.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a compact IWC timepiece with traditional manual-winding mechanics. The 36mm case size and black dial combination provides a classic aesthetic within the Mark XI series. The manual movement and acrylic crystal reflect period-appropriate specifications that attract enthusiasts focused on mechanical simplicity and vintage-style construction details.

Although the power reserve is not very impressive at all

But on the SS model, the dial color is boring. Black would make the watch looks even smaller , while silver dial lacks legibility. Pass for me.
