This detailed inquiry into a potential transitional case back configuration invites expert analysis from the community, highlighting the intricate nuances of vintage military watch collecting. Understanding such anomalies is crucial for preserving the historical accuracy and value of these rare timepieces.
Hello everyone,
I would really appreciate some opinions from serious Ocean 2000 / BUND collectors regarding a very unusual case back configuration that I recently inherited.
What I currently have is an original IWC Ocean 2000 BUND case back with:
Outer military supply number:
6645-12-197-9681
Inner reference stamping:
3501
As most of you probably know, the supply number 6645-12-197-9681 is usually associated with the later Ocean 2000 BUND Ref. 3509, while the inner “3501” stamping would normally belong to the earlier reference.
After a lot of research, I found several discussions suggesting that during the transition period from Ref. 3501 to Ref. 3509, IWC apparently reused earlier 3501 case backs for later 3509 military production. Some collectors mentioned that the inner reference numbers were sometimes changed from 3501 to 3509 — and sometimes not.
This would potentially explain why this case back has:
What makes this even more interesting to me is the provenance:
I received these parts directly from a watchmaker who worked on watches for the German military / Bundeswehr, so this did not come from random parts trading or aftermarket sourcing.
From what I understand, this supply-number configuration would also originally correspond to:
So my questions to the community are:
I am currently also in contact with IWC Heritage to see whether anything can be confirmed through their archives.
Any opinions, experiences, photos, or archive information would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

The Patek Philippe World Time reference 2523, launched in 1953, is distinguished by its innovative two-crown system. One crown serves for winding the watch, while the second, positioned at 9 o’clock, controls the city disc. This design marked a significant development in the functionality and user experience of world time complications for the brand.
The reference 2523 was offered in two primary versions. The initial ref. 2523 featured larger lugs that extended above the bezel, with a case diameter of 35.5 mm. A subsequent variant, ref. 2523/1, presented a slightly larger diameter of 36 mm and thinner lugs that were integrated without extending above the bezel. Both versions were powered by the caliber 12-400 HU, which incorporated the world time module developed by Louis Cottier.
This reference appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's historical advancements in complicated watchmaking, particularly the evolution of its World Time series. The distinct design differences between the 2523 and 2523/1, especially regarding lug integration and case dimensions, provide specific points of interest for enthusiasts tracking the model's development and variations.
