In this installment, WatchProSite's esteemed contributor amanico (Nicolas) concludes his deep dive into the vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic E 168. He shares an extraordinary gathering of these rare timepieces, offering a unique opportunity to compare various metals and dial configurations side-by-side. This post is invaluable for collectors seeking to understand the subtle nuances and true rarity of the original Geophysic references.

Ok, I have to confess that I have a last part I will post later, but I wanted to end this summer series with a Vintage Geophysic Grande Finale.

According to the Manufacture, there were all metal and references included, 1393 Geophysic made. A bit more in my opinion, as I objectively think that more than 30 Geophysic E 168 in rose gold were made. Excluding the Reference E 169, so my guess estimate is that we are somewhere between 1500 and 1600 pieces, in total.

Indeed, I saw a good twenty-ish Geophysic in rose gold, and among them, a bit more than half in the real life... Truth to be told, I saw much less Geophysic in yellow gold!

All that to tell you that seeing a vintage Geophysic in the metal(s) is quite rare. But seeing several at the same place and moment is quite thrilling.

Let's start with a superb pair, in steel and in rose gold, with the classic dial:

Just sublime. A word on the hands on the rose gold, though. Dauphine hands are correct but not with this lume, which is too thick.

Here is a set of correct Dauphine hands. Do you see the difference?

The lume is much thinner.

Now a couple of crossairs Geophysic, in steel, and in yellow gold. The Crosshairs dials in steel and in yellow gold, are pretty rare. Here again, seeing both of them is pretty rare.

I have to say that I am not a fan of colored gold, but here I would make a notable exception, because of the charm and the understatement of such pieces.

What about a foursome, now with the two dials configurations? Isn't that the ultimate Geophysic Collection?

And now, 6 E 168 together... The killer photo.

I could have added mine, which was on my wrist, at the moment of the photo.

For the ultimate collection, some will say that there are still missing a Geophysic in yellow gold, and they will be right, as well as the Geophysic De Luxe Ref 2985, and the less known E 169, which is a Geophysic in gold with its integrated bracelet in gold, too.

The E 169:

But for me, as a big fan of this watch, THE Geophysic is the E 168, whatever the metal or the dial. Indeed, the Geophysic De Luxe is not amagnetic, as it doesn't have the soft iron dust cover which acts like a magnetic shield, and the E 169 is too " mannered " for me.

Seeing all these Geophysic at the same place is a truly special moment I lived. Which I wanted to share with you.

What is your favorite among them? Dial and metal?

Looking forward to reading your comments and thoughts,

Best.

Nicolas

About the Jaeger LeCoultre Geophysic Ref. E168

The Geophysic E168 is a notable reference within the Jaeger LeCoultre Geophysic series, originally introduced in 1958. This particular model is distinguished by its robust construction and precision engineering, designed for scientific observation and accuracy. It represents a period when watch manufacturers focused on creating instruments capable of performing reliably in challenging environments, emphasizing technical merit over decorative embellishments. The E168 is recognized for its clean dial layout and functional aesthetic, reflecting its purpose-built origins.

The case of the Geophysic E168 is crafted from stainless steel, measuring 35mm in diameter. It houses the manual-winding Caliber 478BWS, a movement known for its precision and anti-magnetic properties, featuring a hacking seconds function for accurate time setting. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal, contributing to its vintage character and period-appropriate design. The solid case back further underscores its utilitarian design, protecting the movement from external influences.

For collectors, the Geophysic E168 holds significance as an early example of a highly technical watch from Jaeger LeCoultre. Its appeal lies in its historical context and the engineering principles it embodies. Variants of the Geophysic line are sought after for their understated design and the quality of their movements, making the E168 a key reference for those interested in mid-20th century precision timekeeping instruments.

These examples you’ve got are in excellent condition, the dials are pristine and have aged well... Esp, I like the one with ‘Djibouti’ - a country I discovered due to your post ! Best, Mahesh.,

I love to read of the originals. Your posts are welcomed and valued. I humbly submit these pics (merely for comparison) of the Limited Edition tribute from ~2014. 38mm in steel. Only 800 were produced in steel. The brushed case sides with polished bezel, the applied Arabics, the matte paper white dial, the lumed plots on the rehaut. It's an interesting watch. A fitting tribute.
