Let's start the review of the whole SIHH 2016 JLC collection with the Reverso Classic, as you well know now that this year, we celebrate the 85th anniversary of the rectangular icon of the brand.
For those who didn't read the preview on the 2016 Reverso collection, here is the link:
With the Reverso Classic, it is a return to the fundamentals, because before, classic meant small case, now it rather means fundamentals.
Indeed, let's recall that the Reverso Classic is not available in one size, like, before, but in three sizes: Small ( 34 x 21 x 7, 40 mm ), Medium ( 40 x 24, 4 x 9 mm ), and Large: 45, 6 x 27, 4 x 9, 70 mm ).
And that this line displays the basic time: Hours and Minutes. Because some don't need anything else than class and time. Adepts of the " less is more " motto.
Now, the question is about the movements.
Two movements are available:
- Quartz, for the small size, the Cal 657, made of 43 pieces.
- Automatic for the Medium and Large, the Cal 965, made of 197 parts, beating at 28 800 alternances per hour, and with a power reserve of 48 hours.
Yes, you understood it well, no more manual movement for the Classic.
Good, bad? I am impatient to read your feelings on that " detail ". I for one regret that there is no manual movement option for such a watch.
Aesthetically speaking, we will not be disoriented by these new Reverso Classic, timeless for some 25 years, now...
And which will also be ready to be worn by bigger wrists, now, since there is a " big " case.
Till now, you saw the official pictures, let's see some live pictures, freshly taken, with this precision that the small version has been introduced in 2015, so the true novelties are the medium and the large ones.
Medium:
Large:
Both the medium and the large, to see the different case sizes:
One critic: It is hard to rationalize the new collection. For example, I thought that the Classic Line used two kind of movements: Quartz or Automatic, depending on the size, and that the manual winding movements were dedicated to the Tribute Line...
That is not totally true, as, like we'll see, there is one exception, with the Reverso Classic Duetto, which houses a manual winding movement, while the medium version has an automatic movement.
Disorienting, a bit...
Like the fact that we have two kind of Duos, the Classic, and the Tribute, with two different movements, the first having an automatic movement, the second a manual winding one. And the Classic Duo case is also bigger than the " Classic Classic ".
We'll come back in the details to these Reversos...
Best,
Nicolas
