KIH presents an in-depth look at the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Enamel Watch Collection, focusing on models from Basel 2014. This post explores the brand's iconic Grande Seconde design, inspired by a 1784 pocket watch, and highlights the meticulous craftsmanship of its layered hot enamel dials.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Collection has been the "icon" of J*D, having been inspired by the pocket watch made by Pierre Jacuqet Droz in 1784.

Grande Seconde Quantieme (Basel 2014)
WG, 43mm, Automatic
Ivory Enamel

Really well made "hot" enamel - two layers.

Cotes des Geneve centered at the balance wheel.

The "usual" profile.

Maybe a bit big - due to the thin bezel, looks bigger than it actually is.

Again, look at the very flat surface..... and nice blued steel hands.

Grande Seconde Quantieme
WG, 39mm, Automatic
Ivory Enamel

Again, layered hot enamel dial......

Nicely done surface and blue hands.

Cotes des Geneve is a little bit non-aligned?.... but overall, okay.

Better size for my wrist.

Grande Seconde Quantieme (Basel 2014)
RG, 39mm, Automatic
Ivory Enamel

RG hands are nice, too.

Found this "clover" near the crown position on the back.

Now, for comparison, flat silver dial version.  Not bad at all to my taste.
43mm

39mm version

See the "clover" here again?

Different movement.

This may look better on my wrist.

And, now, the collaboration model with Bejart Ballet Lausanne.  Sketch by Stephanie Barba.

The first design is "Le Chef".... and it was made on the dial....

... like this.

Petite Heure Minute
RG, 43mm, Automatic
"Le Chef"

Signed by Stephanie Barba.

Even the rotor has it, and notice the clover on the bridge.

"Bejart Ballet" engraved on the back.

And this is how Stephanie Barba drew the sketch...

The next one is called "Le Vautour".

Art of Astonishment
Petite Heure Minute
"Le Vautour"
WG, 43mm, Automatic
Diamond bezel and case

Very nice back side.

Little bit too blingy for me, though smile

Well, that's it folks.  As always, I was impressed with the quality of J*D's enamel dials, especially the layered hot enamel as well as the picture painted dials.

Thank you very much, Jaquet Droz Boutique!

The clover leaf is the "secret" signature that Pierre Jaquet Droz placed on his pockewatch movements for the Asian market. I still think the addition of the date function throws off the aesthetics of the original "Grande Seconde" design It is even more pronounced in the 39mm version. But overall the design is still one of the most distinctive in the marketplace. Thanks for the great read Ken, Mike

Thanks, Mike. About the aesthetics.... You may be right. It is not disturbing, but it doesn't have to be there. Besides, with date or not, the layered hot enamel dials is really something. Ken

Those enamel dials are to die for! Thanks for sharing Ken. I think JD does some of the best dials in the market! Cheers Robin
