BaselWorld 2013 : Voutilainen

Kari Voutilainen showed as usual a small number of stunning pieces.
These all use the new 28 movement with its direct impulse escapement with two escape wheels.  The wheels are in red gold, the plate and bridges in german silver.  The hairspring has a Grossman interior curve and Philips exterior curve, the 13.6mm free sprung balance beats at 18,000 vph

This movement also has space planned on the dial side to add complications.  Here we see the first pieces with a second timezone with 24 hour dial.

The Voutilainen 28 Sarasamon has a dial made in the Japanese tradition by the lacquer studios Unryuan in Japan.  Such a dial takes 2 months to complete and uses gold dust, gold leaf, turtle and abalone shell in many layers to create this shimmering surface.

Even if not my taste, the work on these dials is awesome.

The blue dial is my favourite... Kari knows how to torture me. Yes, he knows! Best, and thanks for the report, Don. Nicolas

When we saw Kari in January

...he asked us not to post photos of that particular case back, at the request of the new owner. Looks like the cat is out of the proverbial bag, however... My understanding is that this is another take on the Daughters of Atlas caseback on the Masterpiece 7 -- and quite a different one, at that. If my recollection is correct, both engravings are by Eddy Jaquet -- who also did my Chronos case back. The case itself is also fascinating on that watch -- it's patterned after a vintage pocket watch,
