AndrewD provides an insightful vignette from IGOTT2, focusing on independent watchmaker Kari Voutilainen. This article highlights Voutilainen's philosophy, technical innovations, and dedication to craftsmanship, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of a master horologist.
[In this series of vignettes I will highlight a few of the key points that the independent watchmakers made during their presentations on Day 3 (June 1) of the IGOTT. Some are direct quotes, and others give you an insight into the presentation.]

"I enjoyed sport and doing things with my hands."
"I like precision watches. I like large balance wheels. I wanted to concentrate on one watch and do it all myself. While I would like to work alone, it is simply not possible to do it all. I now work with 12 people in the workshop."
"I have now installed a CNC machine to manufacture my own parts – balance staff, pinions, main plates, etc. As well as a rose engine to turn dials in-house."
"I developed the prototype for the direct impulse escapement 3 years ago. The balance is 13.5mm in diameter with 4 gold weights for timing. The hairspring has a Phillips curve and comes from the Moser group. The single barrel provides 65 hours power reserve. The escapement requires less energy than a Swiss lever design. However it has 3 levels and therefore needs more height. The movement is 30mm in diameter and the case measures 39 x 11mm."

"One hand takes 3 days work, but I know I can make my own and am not dependent on other people."

"The PuristS P10 watch features basket weaving. It is a lot of work but gives an interesting decoration. The finish is engine turned and this design will not be repeated in future works."

Thanks Andrew! What an enjoyable read and photos from you as always!! Amazing watch! Kari does it again! Now, what happened to the power reserve? Last time I heard it was 50 hours? I wouldn't mind 65! Max look impressed! Did Kari and Max do a Purist traditional swap with their watches?
A fascinating moment inspecting the Kari Voutilainen in-house caliber for the first time. Thanks for the remembrance.
Meeting Mr Kari during this IGOTT was one of these unforgettable moments. An artist, a perfectionnist, a gentleman. The only mistake I did was to play with his watches, during our first dinner... Now, I'm seriously haunted by them. Your last picture, showing Max Busser having pleasure in admiring Kari's job reflects the spirit of our IGOTT II. Fraternitiy among Independants. A fresh pciture, for a fresh moment. Best, Andrew. Nicolas;
Always great to see the master and his fine work.
Thank you for insights Andrew Best Damjan
