After spending some quality time with the Datograph 403.035, sharing some early thoughts and impressions.
First, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the members of this forum. Your insightful discussions and advice were invaluable in helping me make the decision to acquire this watch. It is truly a privilege to be surrounded by the collective wisdom of this community.
Why the First Generation?
For me, the choice came down to a few key factors:
Wearability and Comfort
While some forum members had expressed concerns about the Datograph's wearability, It feels fine on my wrist thus far. However, finding the perfect fit is crucial (reminds me of finding a good driving position in an older sports car).
The watch needs to be snug, but not overly tight, to avoid the case back leaving an imprint on your wrist. I'm planning to add a new pin hole to the strap to get to the right fit.
That said, I wouldn't necessarily call this a "daily driver," especially if you're constantly on the move. I do find myself being a bit more mindful of it in tight spaces, like crowded restaurants or shops.
Speaking of the strap, the original grey/blue feels underwhelming. I am thinking of switching to a 20/16mm "jet black" Lange strap (see picture - strap on the left) and I'm considering a dark lizard green option as well. (If members have recommendations for strap colours and the best strap changing tools for this purpose, I’d be very grateful!)
Early Observations
In conclusion, the Datograph to me feels like the highest form of unadulterated quiet luxury. The minor inconvenience of its sub-optimal case back design is more than outweighed by its heritage and historical significance. It does not feel dated at all. It is rarely recognized on the wrist, and yet you are always reminded of its substance - due to its history, heft, and the "handwerkskunst" of the movement. It is almost a growing up process acquiring this watch.

The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph reference 403.035 is a flyback chronograph with a large date display, distinguished by its platinum case and black dial. This reference was part of the original Datograph introduction, which presented a new architecture for chronographs with its outsized date and meticulously finished movement visible through a sapphire caseback. It represents a significant development in modern high horology chronographs.
The watch features a 39mm platinum case with a thickness of 12.8mm, housing the manual-wind caliber L951.1. This movement is notable for its column-wheel control, flyback function, and precisely jumping minute counter. The power reserve for this reference is 36 hours. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the black dial, which features applied rhodiumed gold Roman numerals and baton markers.
This specific reference appeals to collectors interested in the foundational models of A. Lange & Söhne's modern era, particularly those who appreciate the original design and technical specifications of the Datograph. It stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to traditional Saxon watchmaking combined with innovative chronograph mechanics. The platinum and black dial combination is a classic presentation for this model.
I appreciate the review, too, as it's always helpful to hear about the various factors leading to a decision.
First of all - most sincere congratulations, this is a fantastic watch and a perfect all-rounder! Regarding straps - I suggest going for one of the two options: 1 Shinola steel bracelet. This is how I wear mine, and it looks and feels great. 2 Light grey strap to rhyme with dial markers. To me this option is a lot more interesting than going for black strap and "black on black" overall result. BTW, light grey suede looks great too. Congrats again, IMHO this is one of the most impressive watches
This is a fantastic watch, as you know. The cream of any collection. I look forward to seeing more pictures of this one as you live it with more. Regarding straps, I used to wear a “Lange spec” grey gator (which I had Jean Rousseau make for me) on mine. I think I preferred the watch with something a little lighter in colour.
The Dato 1st gen is still the favorite watch in my collection. Just a wonderful and iconic timepiece!
Saw the prev posts on Shinola - it looks great but was concerned on the wear to the lugs
Will send out more pictures once I’ve got a grey strap
