Christianch initiates a compelling discussion, exploring the nuanced appeal and comparative value of Laurent Ferrier's Classic Micro Rotor Ice Blue and Montre Ecole Regulator against the iconic Vacheron Constantin American 1921. His inquiry delves into the factors that differentiate these haute horlogerie pieces, from movement finishing to wearability, inviting the WatchProSite community to share their expert perspectives on these distinct expressions of luxury watchmaking.

I always admired the Laurent Ferrier watches but never had the chance to try one. Now I could finally try the Classic Micro Rotor Ice Blue

This is certainly very classy and verstatile. I also came across the possiblity to get the Montre Ecole Regulator:

As far as I see the Ecole Regulator has been discontinued.  I didn't try the regulator yet but I fear it will not be super readable because, even the classic at 40mm wears pretty small.

I am left wondering on why the ice blue would be x2 the price of the Vacheron American 1921 and the Ecole (Steel) at pretty much the same price of the Vacheron:

I like the the Vacheron is unlike anything else.

I know that pricing should not be discussed so I kept it intentionally vague 😁 but I am left wondering, is it because of the finish/movement/limited production ? If you own a Laurent Ferrier what was the main consideration ?

Last but not list if you had to pick only one among the Ecole or the Vacheron Constantin American 1921 which would you take ?

Thanks!

About the Vacheron Constantin Historiques Ref. American1921

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 is a distinctive reinterpretation of a cushion-shaped watch originally produced by the manufacture for the American market in the 1920s. This reference is characterized by its unique diagonal display, with the crown positioned at the 1 o'clock position and the dial rotated 45 degrees clockwise. This design was historically intended to allow drivers to read the time without removing their hands from the steering wheel, offering both a functional and aesthetically unconventional presentation within the Historiques collection.

This particular iteration of the American 1921 features a case crafted from precious metal, often rose gold, with a polished finish that highlights its cushion shape and stepped bezel. The watch is typically fitted with a manual-winding mechanical movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, providing a power reserve suitable for daily wear. The crystal protecting the dial is also sapphire, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance.

The American 1921 appeals to collectors seeking pieces with historical provenance and an unconventional design. Its distinctive orientation and vintage inspiration make it a conversation piece and a unique offering within Vacheron Constantin's contemporary lineup. Various sizes have been produced, catering to different wrist preferences while maintaining the core design principles of the original 1921 model.

and would thoroughly recommend it. This is a manual winding watch while the LF is an automatic, arguably the best finsihed automatic in the market. Saying that Kari Voutilainen did remark how beautifully finished was the movement of the 1921. But I bought the 1921 because the dial is second to none. It is my first ever and probably my last ever Vacheron as I am really a supporter of Patek and the independent brands.

The long answer is, well, a bit longer. First, VC and LF are among my favorite brands and all the watches you mention are fantastic pieces in their own right. As for the 1921, this is an iconic VC that is very well designed and made. It is extremely wearable too with its slim case and it works in casual settings as well as in elegant ones. I think it is in the top 5 of all VC pieces, at any price point. The only word of caution: try it on before you buy it. I looove it in pics and on others wris

then my brother got the RG. Is such an iconic model and I am glad it is now available in White Gold. Unlike anything else and better than Patek 😁

and at a more doable price. Perhaps the Ecole (beside the annual calendar) was discontinued as it was not so popular.
