The Linde Werdelin Spidolite Tech Gold was introduced at Baselworld 2013 and represents Linde Werdelin’s approach to using new materials.  This particular model is part of the Spido watch collection (with the Oktopus in the other) designed by founders Morten Linde and Jorn Werdelin.   The Spido collection includes the Spidolite and Spidospeed chronograph watches in various case and bezel materials like titanium, black DLC, steel, and 18K rose gold.

The Spidolite Tech Gold for my review debuts the Alloy Linde Werdelin “ALW” which is a proprietary metal alloy.  The development of ALW was the result of two years worth of research and development.   ALW is used for the inner case assembly for the movement and is 50% lighter than titanium while still maintaining the tensile strength of steel.   The outer case has the signature Linde Werdelin skeletonized design as other Spidolite models but the Tech Gold uses forged carbon.  Following this lightweight theme, there are titanium hex screws for the strap attachments.  The bezel and crown is crafted in 18k rose gold which provides a nice color contrast to the swirl pattern of the forged carbon.

This is an on-the-watch review so the timing of receiving this watch was perfect.  I had a long day at work towards the end of December and on a Friday early afternoon I receive a package from our friends at Linde Werdelin.

Everything was secure and well packaged.  A heavy bright orange glossy box was inside a thick cardboard box with the prototype piece protected by a clear plastic wrap.  I had requested a short strap so that it would fit better on my small wrists.  At first glance I loved the color contrast with the forged carbon and the red accents on the dial and red stitching on the textured calfskin strap.

So it was time to leave the office and take out the Spidolite Tech Gold out for a weekend roadtrip in the Corvette.

Just a few short hours drive across the 15 freeway we’ve arrived at our Destination.  Las Vegas!

To impress my new wrist companion, we had reservations for the Spidolite Tech Gold to enjoy the menu degustation at Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

In between the various dinner courses I had a chance to take a few pictures of the watch on our dining table.  Even with a more upscale restaurant like this one I felt that the Spidolite worked with my dress shirt and slacks.  It was definitely comfortable to wear and extremely light weight.

And another picture the watch with a nice holiday gift from the staff at Robuchon.  Our waitress noticed the Spidolite and commented on how nice the color contrast was on my wrist.  I showed her the watch and she was surprised at how light it felt.

The next day we walked around the garden area near the lobby of the Mirage looking at all the holiday decorations.  I was in more casual clothing with my standard polo shirts and jeans.  Again, the versatility of the Spidolite worked well with my apparel.

Only two weekends later I joined a few of my fellow PuristS for a relaxing drive up to Santa Barbara for a brunch at the Four Seasons hotel.  We had some nice ocean views and the pool at the private spa was tempting, but it was little cold so I didn’t go for a dip in the water.  But I’m confident the Spidolite Tech Gold would have done well with it’s 100m water resistance.

On our evening drive back to Los Angeles, we stopped by the Simi Valley area to meet up with some friends for some smokey bbq beef ribs.  The messy sauce got all over, but the watch held up well.

Looking closer at the Linde Werdelin Spidolite Tech Gold, the lightweight watch made it extremely comfortable.  As you can see for these pictures, the thick but flexible black textured calfskin strap angles downward and fit very well on my small wrist.

At first I was concerned that the 18k rose gold bezel was going to make the watch top heavy and possibly twist the watch sideways, but it was fine and I really didn’t feel the heaviness of the gold bezel.  It was surprisingly light.  I also usually prefer deployant buckles, but the Spidolite Tech Gold came with a ardillon buckle.  The buckle is relatively thin with a slightly curved design which made it comfortable.  The strap is attached to the case using Linde Werdelin’s proprietary strap system and is attached with titanium hex screws.  Before I actually received the watch I requested a short strap which was installed by the Linde Werdelin watchmakers before delivery so I didn’t personally try to change out the strap but I’m guessing it would be an easy task.  For the strap itself, I loved it.  It conformed well to my wrist, the inside calfskin was comfortable and the outside texture had a nice pattern to it.  The red stitching really stood out and was a perfect match to the red accents on the watch.

One other nice detail that I really like was that this short strap included two strap keepers, one that is fixed position and stitched securely near the buckle and the second strap keeper floating to be adjustable with the tail end of the strap.  Most of the other watches that I have with OEM short straps only include one keeper which, in my opinion, doesn’t really hold down the strap.

Next in part 2, we take a closer look at the forged carbon case design and skeletonized dial.

The Spidolite watch is made up of three main components, the inner case (ALW), the outer case (forged carbon) and bezel (18k rose gold). Linde Werdelin also offers a comparable model, the Spidolite Tech Green which has a ceramic bezel paired with forged carbon case and green color accents. The forged carbon material is strands of carbon fibers that are molded into the case shape and then compressed under heat and high pressure. What is amazing about this process is how the case design with its m

After nearly a month of daily wear I came to really enjoy the Spidolite Tech Gold. The lightweight materials made the watch very comfortable to wear. The rose gold bezel provided a visual contrast to the dark colored forged carbon, and the red accents ties everything together. The case and strap design curved enough to make it very easy toe wear for those with smaller wrists. Overall I like the watch and the high tech look and feel of the Spidolite Tech Gold. Always admired the case work from LW. Skeletonizing the dial etc is a great touch and gels with the overall look. Although the movement is nothing to shout about , like wise the work done works as an overall concept. Thanks for the review. Can really see myself with one of these , though mainly for casual wear.

I wish you had provided photos of the BBQ sauce immersion test. I'm sure L W wouldn't have minded :-) BTW - do they still sell a number of the clip-over calculator / computer modules, or is their focus primarily on the watches now? Cheers, Cazalea

Thanks flamenco. Agree with you about the movement and the overall concept. I wore it to work (I'm in a suit and tie everyday) and agree that it's mainly for casual wear. I dressed up nicer for that dinner at Robuchon, but hey it's Vegas so I can be as blingy as I want :) Regards, ED-209

Good idea, I probably should have included a bottle of bbq sauce when I sent the Spidolite Tech Gold back to the LW staff :) Yes, the dive and ski instruments are still sold by LW, maybe we should ask them to loan you one of The Reef dive instruments for your next whale watching trip.
