AndrewD's post from IGOTT2 offers a concise yet insightful vignette into Ludovic Ballouard, an independent watchmaker known for his unique 'Upside Down' watch. This piece provides a valuable biographical sketch, tracing Ballouard's journey from aircraft instrument technician to a respected independent horologist, and highlights the distinctive design elements of his inaugural creation.

[In this series of vignettes I will highlight a few of the key points that the independent watchmakers made during their presentations on Day 3 (June 1) of the IGOTT. Some are direct quotes, and others give you an insight into the presentation.]

Ludovic presenting the P10 Upside Down to the IGOTT2 audience...

Born in France in 1971 and interested in building model aeroplanes since 12 years of age. In 1987, at 16 years of age, planned to become a dental technician, but his school recommended watchmaking as an alternative.

From 1988-91 trained in France. From 1992-97 worked as an aircraft instrument technician in Brittany.

Relocated to Switzerland in 1998 and worked for 3 years at Franck Muller.

Then worked at F.P.Journe for 7 years, particularly with the Grand Sonnerie.

Became independent in April 2009 to develop the Upside Down watch.

The concave case side of the Upside Down produces an upside down reflection. Sleek buttresses protect the crown which is engraved by hand with "LB".

The pin buckle is in the shape of a "B" for Ballouard. All hidden parts in the watch are decorated.

... and demonstrating the differences in the cases. Note that the sides of the Upside Down are concave and produce an inverted, 'upside down', reflection. Also the lugs on the Upside Down are rounded and smoothed in all planes compared with the sharper edges of the F.P.Journe barrel case.

1pm and time to finish lunch ...

Hi Stefan. Thanks for adding the movement photos. There is even more to love on this view, isn't there? And which did you prefer? The contrast of the 'silver' movement in the RG case was very impressive. It was Ludovic's favorite too I think. And it will be exciting to see his new work early in 2012. I agree it is a very comfortable watch to wear. That's actually how we got onto the comparison with the F.P.Journe case. That's another watch that I find very well balanced on the wrist; it basicall
