I don't mind waitlists, but they way they are handled by big brands like Rolex, Patek, ALS, and AP are outright disrespectful towards customers. There's no real clarity whether the "list" is real, and just seems to require you to buy a bunch of trash that you have no interest in owning. I am currently waiting on a Voutilainen Inverse, and an Armin Strom Resonance. In contrast to the big brands, both of these independents were very honest & up front to deal with.
