mkt33 provides an in-depth look at the Montblanc Timewalker 100's composite case construction, offering a detailed comparison with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme Lab. This exploration highlights Montblanc's unique approach to materials and manufacturing, making a 10-year-old discussion relevant for understanding advanced watchmaking techniques.

OK, today let's take a look at the case construction of the TimeWalker 100.

It uses a combination of Grade 5 Titanium, Titanium with DLC, and Titanium with carbon fiber coating.

First let's get the obvious comparisions out of the way.  Many PuristS commented that the TimeWalker 100's case looked like the one on JLC's Master Compressor Extreme Lab.

Let's take a look at the side profile. Here's the TimeWalker 100

Here is the side profile of the JLC

However similar the appearance, the construction between these two watches is different.  Let's take a closer look. (BTW, these comparisons are being made not to say one watch's case construction is better than the other.  I'm making the comparisons only to highlight the differences).

Here is an "exploding" schematic of the case components.  TimeWalker 100 on your left, JLC on the right.

But let's discuss a few aspects of Montblanc's process which are very unique.

First, if you look closely at the diagram above, you will see that the main body of the case is composed of three separate pieces.  Two titanium wings (#3 and #4) with a central body (#1).

Titanium sheathed with carbon fiber forms the central body of the case: Montblanc crafts this sheath as a seamless, structured cacoon rather than merely gluing a simple carbon fiber sheets around a titanium cage. Several dozen layers of carbon fibers, with the fibers in each layer oriented at 90° to those in the preceding layer, are fused together with artificial resin at high temperature and at a pressure of 10 tons. This produces a compact carbon-fiber block. The case’s round sheath is stamped perpendicularly to the carbon fiber layers to form a seamless "monoblock" which is then friction fitted over the case’s titanium middle piece. The monoblock’s surface boasts a special horizontally striped pattern rather than the typically texture of carbon-fiber. This combination creates a lightweight yet remarkably robust case. (notice that the central body #1 is actually two components in the schematic above...an inner titanium cage, and this specially construction carbon fiber ring which fits over it)

Here is another profile photo which captures the unique carbon fiber orientation and the MOP crown well

Here are some pictures of the titanium wings

These wings of brushed grade 5 titanium clamp together with the central body sandwiched in between and is secured to the titanium DLC coated bezel and case back using screws to form an exoskeleton for the central body.

Because of how they are fitted, these wings also create the skeletonized lugs which are key design features found on all watches in the Timewalker family.  See the space between the "lug" and the case?

Here is a sideview of a traditional Timewalker chronograph to compare

To pay homage to history, Montblanc chose to place the actuator button for the chronograph at the 12 o'clock position in exactly the same spot as a vintage stopwatch.

Overall the case measures 45.6 mm in diameter and is about 15.5 mm thick.  It is a large watch but because of the short lugs there is no overhang.

You can see that it wears nicely on  different PuristS' wrists.

Perhaps it will be on your wrist next?

Enjoy,  Mike

PS- Tomorrow we will have a very quick look at the dial work!

for those who like larger sized watches. Looking forward to reading more! Cheers, Anthony

Not to mention it looks really nice on pictures! I had the chance to see it in the metal before and it really falls nicely into the "super watch" category, like a super car. I will be posting some info on the equally well constructed dial soon. Stay tuned! Thanks Mike for kicking off the Montblanc Timewalker 100 write-ups. This is a watch we should discuss more often here! It's the flagship model of the Timewalker series now (previously held by the Greytech) and another Montblanc watch from LeLo
