Arie - Mr Orange's annual review of the most acquired watches by PuristS in 2016 offers a fascinating glimpse into the community's collective taste. This article spotlights the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch CK2998 Limited Edition and the MontBlanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition as the standout pieces. It provides unique insights into purchasing trends and the significant influence of the PuristS community on the market for specific limited editions.

Only two watches come to mind really. And I will explain my approach to this selection.

First
The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch CK2998 Limited Edition
19 PuristS have bought and took delivery of this watch last year. At least as far as my quick scan of the Omega forum could tell me last (hectic) week so please correct me if I'm wrong. So it's safe to state that this is the most bought watch from 2016 and a real PuristS and Community Watch.

Fun (or disturbing?) Fact:
Our fellow member hkrauss bought his on the fly. Walked into an AD to try out another watch and got offered the CK2998 while he was sitting there. No waiting list for Mr Krauss. Well done! On the 9th of July he posted his score and by doing so he was to first on the forum with his own CK2998. Probably making some other members very jealous ;-)

Second
The MontBlanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Limited Edition

10 PuristS have bought this watch in 2016 and 9 of them took delivery in that year. In Q1 of 2017 our dear Dr Kol will take delivery of his making the total number of PuristS owning one 10.

Impressive Fact
This means that PuristS have bought 10% of all of the available Steel Tachymeters from MontBlanc in the world!! How about that?

Have a great 2017 and lets see which watches will make it to this selection next year!

About the Montblanc 1858 Collection Ref. 1858

The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.

For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.

The movement of the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual just didn't satisfy you completely? ;-)

Contemplating myself if I shouldn't add it as well...but I'm trying to resist!

I thought it was somewhere between these 2. The 2998 and the 1858 Tachymeter are in two different leagues, in terms of price and mechanically speaking. But they are two great watches, in terms of presence, character and charm. No wonder why they are popular, here. Good post, Arie. Best, Nicolas

But this year I will keep (better) track of the 2017 developments in order to give a better report next year. This idea only came to me last week...

but my gut feeling tells me not as many as the CK2998 (at least not posted). But I have no evidence to back this up...
