Ant's post introduces Ophion watches, sparking a discussion on value, craftsmanship, and the definition of high-end horology. He shares his personal experience acquiring an Ophion, highlighting its visual appeal and the brand's transparent approach to manufacturing. This article explores the community's diverse reactions to Ophion's philosophy and product.
Almost a year ago there was a posting on the site about Ophion watches. As is the way of things my curiosity was piqued and I decided to have a look at their site.
Talk about a beguiling concept: design a watch which is visually eerily similar to artisan works from esteemed makers,,,,,but do it industrially with automated machines churning out hundreds instead of singles.
Don't make any silly claims about heritage, be up-front with what is being done. Sunlight is the best illuminator.
Oh dear, here we go again....another watch ordered!! What can I say? No excuses, I'm an addict!!!
So here we have a watch which from the on-the-wrist view looks like a piece of exotica but costs about 10-20% of 'the real thing'.
It raises many questions and discussion topics about what exactly constitutes a high end watch. So many of the self titled high end brands use sub-contractors to make almost everything and only attend to final assembly, the production of sexy marketing images and subtly written press releases that almost fizz because they have so much spin.
And then you have Ophion......no B/S, just the unvarnished truth. "We are using machines to do what artisan hands do" Okay the movement doesn't have any fancy finish, but, in truth, what does that actually DO?
The visuals are quite lovely. A machined guillochet dial, completely separete raised chapter ring with cut through numerals, lovely hands, a simple sensibly sized classy case, subtly domed crystal, nice crown....and extra nice winding feel.
Everything about it and its presentation reveals the passion and comittment of its designers.
In a previous life I was a manufacturer and have a reasonable understanding of what it takes to achieve such results. Cast iron will power, the absolute determination not to let suppliers f**k you up, cojones the size of footballs: nobody, nothing is going to stop you from achieving your dream.
Yup, Miguel (a damn nice chap and all round gent) has done it. Here are some pics:
