Kong provides an insightful overview of Oris's 2015 Baselworld collections, highlighting the brand's strategic position in the 'affordable luxury' segment. His post delves into key releases, including the evolution of their in-house caliber and the revival of a vintage diver, offering a valuable perspective on Oris's commitment to both innovation and heritage.

For solid and comfortable workhorses, ORIS is no surprise to many.  With heated competition in the watch industry, it is smart to quietly play in the segment of the “affordable luxury”.

This post will provide a glimpse of some of the interesting ORIS Basel 2015 pieces ...

ORIS is known for a long time to be competent in the field of Sea, Land and Air.  Last year, at its 110th anniversary, ORIS unveiled Caliber 110, an in-house developed manual-winding caliber with a single barrel delivering 10-day power reserve to play in the dress-watch segment.

This year, the Caliber 110 progresses to Caliber 111 with the addition of a date function.

The new 43mm diameter ORIS Caliber 111 is available in either stainless steel or 18K Rose Gold case.  4 dial-variations -  for the steel the dial colours are silver-gray or sunray black-gold; whereas for 18K RG, it will come with either opaline silver-gold or maroon.

The above piece is a stainless stell with silver-gray dial, with small second at 9H with the newly added date function and the power reserve indicator at 3H.

The slim-bezel design gives an impression of a watch larger than 43mm.  Sapphire crystal is anti-reflective coated on the underside to eliminate glare.

Large signed crown enable easy winding and adjustment of the time.

Hands and hour-indexes are with Super-Luminova for low-light reading of time.  The water-resistance is rated to 30m.

Open-caseback displaying the single large barrel of the neatly industrial finished Caliber 111.  The handwound Caliber 111 beats at 21,600VPH.
The 111 is complement with either a black or brown croco leather strap with folding clasp.  For the steel model, it also has the option of steel bracelet.

Next another wonderful piece - the ORIS Divers Sixty Five ...

This nice looking vintage diver is a revival from ORIS collection fifty years ago, year 1965.

The new ORIS Divers 65 retains the retro look with modern improvements.   The water-resistance is rated to 100m for this diameter 40mm anti-corrosive stainless steel case.

The bezel is updated to uni-directional rotational for safety reason from the yesteryear's bi-drectional.

Hour indexes and hands are filled with SuperLuminova for low-light time reading.

Another feature retained is the bubble-curved crystal.  Previously was plexi-glass, the new is of a sapphire (a bubble-curved sapphire crystal, seems to be more costly to produce than typical flat crystal) and anti-reflective coated on the second surface for better legibility.

Top side of the case is brush-finished while the rest is gloss-polished.  Crown is screw-down type.

Solid caseback to better withstand the depth.  Within is ORIS Caliber 733, a Selita SW200 base beating at 28,800VPH with a power reserve of about 38 hours.

The Sixty Five comes with black rubber strap or black NATO strap.

This piece is NICE!!

Next is the Big Crown ProPilot GMT ....

The 45mm Big Crown ProPilot GMT with the  newly developed GMT movement, Cal 748 (based on SW220-1), is targeted at traveller and pilots.  Large and good legibility.  Sapphire crystal is anti-reflective coated on the inner surface to reduce glare.
Hour markers and hands are coated with SuperLuminova .  Open-caseback and paired with green textile strap with stainless steel folding clasp.

Moving to the ground or land, the motorsports models - The ORIS Williams Collection ...

Two models for this year, in stainless steel case : 44mm chronograph and 42mm Time with Day Date.

The interesting feature of this new ORIS Williams Chronograph is upon reset, the zero-point (start-point) of the chronograph-sundials is at position 8H, just like the speedometer of the racing cars.  The sub-dial at 9H is the small-second, while the sub-dial at 12H is the minute-totaliser and the 6H sub-dial (with the 'W' logo and date)  is the hour-totaliser.

This 44mm stainless steel case is water-resistance rated to 100m.

The caseband near to the crown is cut-out to display the brand WILLIAMS.

Open caseback displaying the Caliber 774, based on SW500.

This chronograph model comes with black rubber strap with steel folding clasp.  Stainless steel bracelet option is also available.

Next is the ORIS Williams Day Date, in 42mm stainless steel case with water resistance rated to 100m too.

Flat sapphire crystal is anti-reflective coating to reduce glare. Blue second hand with the 'W' logo, the trademark of Williams F1.
Caseband is brush-polished while the bezel is glossy for interesting light-play.

Open caseback too with Caliber ORIS Cal 735, based on SW220.

It comes with rubber strap with steel clasp with option of steel bracelet too.

ORIS Audi Sport Limited Edition II

For the second year partnership with Audi Sport, ORIS issues the Edition II, a watch dedicated to the Audi R18 e-tron quattro .
This edition is limited to 2,000 pieces and will be worn by the Audi Sport drivers.

Just like the hybrid Audi R18 e-tron quattro, this 44mm diameter case is made of a combination of titanium caseband, steel screw-in crown and pushers, all coated with DLC.  The bi-directional bezel is of ceramic.

The sub-dial at 12H is also a 10-minute countdown timer for the drivers to keep track of the race start time.

At 9H, is an interesting red retrograde small-second.

Titanium caseback with engraving of the Audi R18 and the limited number.  Within is automatic ORIS Cal 778, based on Sellita SW500 beating at 28,800VPH with a power reserve of about 48 hours.

Which ones catch your attention?  smile

Without, it would have been a Bomb! I also love the Cal 111. The movement, less the dial. Best, Nicolas

...is an unwelcome complication. I actually think a discrete date window at 3 o'clock is better than stacking the date window on top of the 6 or next to the 9 o'clock. Still, a very nice option in the crowded neo-vintage category. Cheers, Daos

location 9H.... it's not to my liking. For the 111, perhaps a better position is at 12H. The Divers 65, is attractive taking into consideration the list price :-) Thanks for viewing, Daos. Kong
