Kicks Off in August
Officine Panerai debuts a beautiful new Hospitality Lounge to Celebrate 2013 Season
For its ninth consecutive season globally, Officine Panerai is proud to serve as the title sponsor of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge – a collection of ten classic yachting regattas all over the world—and a tribute to the brand's intrinsic connection to the sea. In March 1936, the commandos of the Italian Navy tested the first Officine Panerai timepiece prototype, created in response to the military's request to develop a luminous underwater watch. From that point on, Officine Panerai has always been associated with the sea, and admired for the historic and innovative nautical instruments the company has been producing for more than a century. Since 2006, Panerai North America has been celebrating the Brand's nautical roots by bringing together the captains and crews of some of the world's most majestic classic sailing vessels for three weekends of competition, sportsmanship and camraderie off the beautiful coastline of New England.
The PCYC North American Circuit consists of three classic sailing contests - the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 9th – 11th, Marblehead, MA), the Opera House Cup (August 15th – 18th, Nantucket, MA) and the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta (August 30th – September 1st, Newport, RI). Each of these magnificent regattas typically attracts between 50 and 60 classic sailing vessels from around the world. Prizes are awarded to the winners of each individual class, to the overall regatta winner at each regatta, and to the all-encompassing champion of all three regattas comprising the North American Circuit. The overall winner of each regatta will win a coveted Panerai timepiece, with the overall Circuit winner taking home the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge North American Circuit Trophy – an elegant sculpture reminiscent of a classic sailboat. This much-coveted final prize is awarded at the culmination of Newport's Museum of Yachting regatta. Valiant, a 12-meter Sparkman & Stephens which hails from Marblehead, took home the PCYC North American Circuit Trophy for Best Overall Performance in the Series in 2012.
This year, captains, crew and VIP guests will be hosted in Nantucket and Newport in a beautiful new Panerai Hospitality Lounge which mirrors the casually-elegant welcoming lounge that is used for Officine Panerai's Mediterranean regattas.
Community Tie-ins
As has become tradition, in continued support of Panerai North America's founding sponsorship of the non-profit organization Sailing Heals¸the company will once again host patient and caregiver sails in conjunction with each host city's local medical centers and clinics – Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Women and Infants Hospital, to name a few. Sailing Heals' mission is to provide unique sailing and boating experiences to individuals, families, caregivers and staff who may be experiencing a health setback or loss where all can benefit from a congenial, relaxing day on the water.
OFFICINE PANERAI
Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and school of watch-making, for many decades Officine Panerai supplied the Italian Navy in general, and its specialist diving corps in particular, with precision instruments. The designs developed by Panerai in that time, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act for many years and were launched on the international market only after the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997. Today Officine Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture. The latter are a seamless melding of Italian design flair and history with Swiss horological expertise. Panerai watches are sold across the world through an exclusive network of distributors and Panerai boutiques.
PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE
In honor of its historic links to the sea, Officine Panerai has promoted classic sailing culture for many years through its sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the leading international circuit for these vintage craft. In 2007, the company also acquired and restored the Bermudan ketch Eilean. Built in 1936 by the legendary Fife yard at Fairlie in Scotland, she is now the brand's ambassador at vintage and classic boat rallies and regattas.
