foversta delivers a comprehensive hands-on review of the Panerai Mare Nostrum 2017 (PAM00716), delving into its aesthetic appeal and controversial closeness to the 1993 Mare Nostrum. The author navigates the delicate balance between appreciating the new reference on its own merits and acknowledging the sentiments of collectors who own the original. This review offers a critical perspective on Panerai's re-edition strategy and the watch's unique design elements.

The PAM000 represents the Luminor Base Logo within Panerai's Luminor Base series. This reference carries the fundamental characteristics of the Luminor Base collection while incorporating the brand's logo display on the dial.
The watch features a 44mm polished steel case housing a black dial. The substantial case diameter positions this model within Panerai's larger-sized offerings, maintaining the proportions characteristic of the Luminor Base architecture.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking an entry point into the Luminor Base series with logo branding. The 44mm steel construction and black dial configuration represent a foundational specification within the model range, offering the core Luminor Base aesthetic in a straightforward execution.
... As an owner of the 1993 version, I personaly don´t care too much about the way this new model could affect the value or collectible interest of the older model. As a matter of fact, I am not sure if there will be any adverse effect, as I feel die hard Paneristi will keep looking after the original tritum dial watch while those who don´t care about this detail will welcome the new version as an alternative more easy to find than the old model. I find this chrono a very charming and lovely vin
I'm of the opinion that the more "copies/clones" they make, the more value they will create for the...original. From a pure collector's viewpoint, the more clones the better it is. From the weekend collector's point of view...bummer...I won't be able to "flip" my Pre-V anytime soon. From the balance sheet of Panerai, point of view? Money, money...money After Panerai started producing the 372 and 557, the demand for 127 and 217, remained (and remains) pretty strong. All of this IMO of course
Patiently waiting my AD's phone call... I feel weeks have never been so long recently. And after reading your review, the wait becomes even more painful HAGWE Fabio
i have always liked the Mare Nostrum, and mostly for it`s `strange ness` in the scale of Km and interrupted chrono scales, although the small hashes in the subdials are aproximately the seconds of the outer scale. I love the bold case, almost steam punk/industrial before the hype ? As i dont see the point in releasing a watch that already excists, I do wonder if a movement upgrade, and keeping the original design, would have been a better course of action. True to the original but with a modern
It is way too close to the Pre Vendome, as you said. I would have preferred, BY FAR, a smaller PAM 300, whose case was 52 mm big... But in the same style than the PAM 300. Or a totally different approach of the Mare Nostrum. Best, Nicolas
I think the main idea could have been to design first a nice dress watch using this initial design. So the potential customers could be anyone looking for a dress watch or pam lovers which can connect to the closeness of the pam 300.
