Some of you may have seen another “WFM” post last week over on the IWC forum.  In a similar vein today I pulled out another watch which hasn’t seen a whole lot of wrist time in the last several years

My PAM 360.  Introduced for the 10th anniversary of Paneristi, 10 years ago in 2010.

Not without a lot of controversy, an article from another site ran the headline “It Could Have Been So Wonderful” which probably summed up very well the overall feeling at the time among potential owners.

There were only 300 watches, and Panerai received almost ten times the number of requests.  That might not seem like a huge over subscription in today’s terms but I think ten years ago for what was still a somewhat niche brand and a watch that was announced on an even more niche platform (Paneristi) 10x over subscribed was significant

I was really fortunate to be allocated one of these watches.  At the time, and looking back today, I think it wouldn’t be an unfair statement to say “I didn’t deserve one” or that there were “other Ristis more deserving”.  The flip side to this of course is that of the original owners my guess is a significant number no longer own this piece, whereas it remains a core part of my collection.

It represents a time for me where watches meant Panerai and watch collecting meant Panerai.  I had a fair number of Panerai throughout the 2000s, and cycled through even more, and while there were other watches in the collection at the time (and still in the collection today) Panerai played a huge part and more often than not was the watch on my wrist.

Here’s a shot from today.  Always loved the 360 on these OEM Riva straps.

About the Panerai Mare Nostrum Steel Ref. PAM300

The PAM300 represents Panerai's Mare Nostrum series in a steel case configuration. This reference delivers the Mare Nostrum design in brushed steel construction with a substantial 52mm case diameter.

The watch features a brushed steel case measuring 52mm across, paired with a matching brushed steel bezel. Protection comes from 1.6mm sapphire crystal, while water resistance extends to 30 meters. The movement is the Calibre OP XXV, housed within the steel case construction.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking a large-format steel sports watch from Panerai's Mare Nostrum collection. The 52mm case size positions it for those who prefer substantial wrist presence, while the brushed steel finishing provides a utilitarian aesthetic. The PAM300 offers an entry point into the Mare Nostrum series for collectors focused on steel case variants.

10 years later, it’s evident you were a perfect home for this watch.

I’ve thought several times in recent years of trying to find something else to compliment it, as it’s my only Panerai these days. Something older for sure, but also a Base.

What’s also interesting to me is that this watch was announced when much of the world was getting back on their respective feet post the 2008 Financial Crisis. At that time it wasn’t clear to me if spending money on a watch was the prudent thing to do, and it likely wasn’t. However I did so, and thankfully have no regrets. And now, 10 years later we find ourselves in another stressed situation but not yet in the upswing and back on our feet. Looking at the 360 today it’s reference number is very

Controversy or not, it is a beautiful piece and definitely a favorite of mine.

And you’re posting these he-man pieces so we don’t have a hissy when you buy that over-sized Optimum. Right?

Despite many people’s disdain for faux patina, I loved the look of this dial/markers. It was in so many ways more practical than going after an early piece that may have visually looked similar (objectivity speaking, those earlier pieces look better actually). And then the PVD case, at 44mm for me I need something that has some visual tricks to look a little smaller and a PVD’d case is one of those.
