Amanico introduces the Panerai PAM557, a 'Destro Classic' that offers a unique twist with its crown protector at 9 o'clock. He invites the community to consider its charm and whether it would complement the iconic PAM372, sparking a discussion on Panerai's design philosophy and collector preferences.

The Panerai PAM372 is a Luminor 1950 model that draws inspiration from historical Panerai designs, particularly those from the 1950s. It is distinguished by its clean, two-hand dial layout and the absence of a small seconds sub-dial, which emphasizes its vintage aesthetic. This reference was part of a series that aimed to reintroduce classic Panerai elements to a contemporary audience, focusing on simplicity and historical accuracy in its presentation. It represents a direct link to the brand's heritage, offering a less complicated display than many of its counterparts.
The watch features a 47mm polished steel case, characteristic of early Panerai models, fitted with a 3mm thick Plexiglass crystal. It houses the in-house developed manual-wind Calibre P.3000, which provides a substantial power reserve of three days. The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal case back, allowing for appreciation of its construction. The large crown guard, a signature Luminor feature, ensures water resistance and protects the winding crown.
For collectors, the PAM372 is notable for its faithful recreation of historical design cues, including the "sandwich" dial construction and the use of Plexiglass, which contributes to its vintage appeal. Its limited production run and adherence to traditional Panerai proportions make it a sought-after reference among enthusiasts who value the brand's origins. The watch appeals to those seeking a direct connection to Panerai's past without modern embellishments.
I don't think I would add it to my 372, but to have one or the other is well worth it. 2 would be a big cherry! I lust a 662, maybe that one with this Destro would be tops.
I have never checked on panerai and just started recently reading about them. I am still at the beginning of the info chain. What are the reference movements of panerai? Can anyone give a guidance here ? Thanks a lot. Btw: do you guys read the perezcope.com blog? Cheers Alberti
Which one would you choose?
... as it has a strong connection with the war years Panerai watches and it is very comfortable on the wrist (though a big akward I recognize) with the crown guards at nine. It makes a nice collection piece. The watch is a mirror of a 372, so it has all the charm of the iconic dial of that reference. A big watch which I enjoy having on my wrist this week by coincidence with your post and your superb picture. Abrazos amigo! Abel.
If I ever add a 662, I would still keep the 372. If I only owned a 662, I might be inclined for the destro. 372 is the best Panerai I have ever owned. If only it had a solid caseback, it would be perfect.
Btw, it is confirmed from the factory, it comes indeed with sapphire, unlike what was reported previously - a big plus for my personal taste. All the very best dear friends, Alex
