Amanico introduces the Panerai 2014 collection's PAM785 set, a significant release that revives the spirit of the iconic 1996 Slytech Daylight and Black Seal. This post delves into the historical context of these watches, highlighting their modern iteration and the brand's strategic move to appeal to 'old school' collectors.

The Panerai Nautical Curvimeter PAM500 is a specialized instrument rather than a traditional wristwatch, designed for navigation and measurement. This particular reference is notable for its limited production and its connection to the "Slytech" line, indicated by the fourth line on its dial. It represents a unique offering within Panerai's historical instrument lineage, distinct from their more commonly known timepieces. Its purpose is to measure distances on maps, reflecting Panerai's heritage in precision tools.
This curvimeter features a substantial 42 mm case, crafted from wood and glass, housing a key-wound movement with an 8-day power reserve. The instrument's construction emphasizes its functional design, with a clear glass crystal protecting the dial. The robust build and specific measurement function underscore its utility as a navigational aid, aligning with Panerai's historical role in supplying instruments to the Italian Navy.
The PAM500 appeals to collectors interested in Panerai's broader history of precision instruments, beyond just wristwatches. Its rarity, coupled with the "Slytech" dial inscription, makes it a distinctive piece for those who appreciate the brand's less common offerings. The limited release, reportedly not reaching its full planned production of 500 units, further contributes to its collectibility and unique position within the Panerai catalog.
Although I'm not a Luminor 44 mm fanatic (to me Panerai is all about 47 mm cushion shaped) I must admit that this set is a big deal. First and foremost we can consider this Black Seal THE REAL Black Seal (as the preV never came to production) and secondly because Panerai managed to make a contemporary watch attractive for those who had little attraction for the contemporary pieces due to their love for the old school...well done!
If that one was sold separately, I'm pretty sure it would give the 587 stiff competition!!! Not that the set won't sell out all the same ;) T4S :)
I mean, the Daylight or the Black Seal, rather than having to get the Set, yes. I had these two pre vendome pièces, so you can understand why I am so pleased to see these 2! ;) Best, and thanks for your feedback. Nicolas
but I fear the worst ... Demand out stripping demand ... Not into that game .. No matter how much I think this is great .... Do apologize for the negativity , but time and again ... Such a shame
First feeling... Too bad! Best, Nicolas
appreciate the idea of breathing life into the 5218-218 (a-la 2533/373) and reinforcing the strong Pre-V connotation by adding the "whity", I'm not sure I like the set. The extensive usage of the "ecru luminova" (which for me will remain faux-tritium, for ever) is a turn-off. I'm sure that for a number of...nostalgics..they will prove to be sure winners :-) Cheers
