Having acquired and parted with over a dozen or so Panerais, I have come to the conclusion that a 42mm watch will best fit my rather small wrist, with perhaps one exception - the PAM 192, which is 44 mm in diameter. Boy, how I love the black buffalo strap which gave the watch a very macho feel (see picture below):

Nevertheless, I never stopped the hunt and the great debate is whether I should go for the PAM 65 (Big Date in PT) or the PAM 80 (Independent), both with mesmerizing blue dials... I eventually settled on the latter, perhaps swayed by the interesting Chezard movement that creates the jumping center second.

The watch was hard to come by but I was patient enough to wait for three years and alas, my prayers were answered last month.

Both our moderators - Anthony Tsai and Jester - had written extensively about the piece so I won't attempt to duplicate their efforts here. The watch is in white gold and produced in a limited quantity of 160 in 2001.

Without further ado, here are some pictures of the watch, and macros of the movement:

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

About the Panerai PAM00160 - Luminor GMT, steel case & bracelet Ref. PAM160

The Panerai PAM 80 'Independent' is a distinguished Radiomir model, part of a limited series that showcased Panerai's exploration into more complex movements during the early 2000s. It stands out within the brand's catalog for its unusual complication and precious metal construction, appealing to collectors seeking unique expressions beyond the standard Luminor and Radiomir designs.

This timepiece features a 42mm white gold case, housing a modified Chezard movement that enables a jumping center seconds hand, a complication rarely seen in Panerai watches. The blue dial provides a striking contrast against the white gold, enhancing its visual appeal. It was produced in a limited edition of 160 pieces, making it a notable and sought-after reference.

The PAM 80 holds significant collector relevance due to its limited production, the distinctive jumping seconds complication, and its use of a modified vintage movement. It represents a period when Panerai experimented with horological complexity, offering a unique blend of historical design cues with an unexpected mechanical feature.

At last...

So thrilled for you Sam. I never got tired of looking at the jumping second of the PAM80 and I LOVE telling everyone, when asked, that I'm wearing a fake quartz Panerai! :-)

Bravo, Sam. you know how to choose your watches! Best, Nicolas, who still wonders why he sold the 192!
