About the Panerai Radiomir GMT Alarm Ref. PAM00098

The Panerai Radiomir GMT Alarm, reference PAM00098, represents a significant departure from the brand's early, time-only military instruments, showcasing Panerai's evolution into a purveyor of sophisticated complications. Introduced in the early 2000s, this model integrated the iconic Radiomir cushion case and wire lugs with a more complex movement, bridging the gap between Panerai's historical roots and its contemporary expansion into broader horological functions. It stands as an early example of Panerai's willingness to innovate beyond its core dive watch identity, offering collectors a piece with both heritage aesthetics and practical utility.

Technically, the PAM00098 is distinguished by its dual complications: a GMT function and a mechanical alarm. The black dial features Panerai's characteristic luminous Arabic numerals and stick markers, ensuring legibility. The GMT function is indicated by a central hand pointing to a 24-hour scale on the outer rehaut, while the alarm is set via an inner rotating disc, controlled by the lower of the two crowns on the right flank of the case. Powering these functions is the automatic Panerai Caliber OP XVII, based on an ETA 2892-A2 with a Dubois DΓ©praz 2000 alarm module, a reliable and well-regarded engine for such complications.

As a discontinued reference, the PAM00098 holds a unique position in the secondary market. Its blend of the classic Radiomir design with practical complications like GMT and an alarm makes it particularly appealing to collectors seeking a Panerai that offers more than just time-telling. While not produced in the same volumes as some of the brand's more ubiquitous models, its distinct feature set and relatively limited availability contribute to its collectibility, marking it as a notable piece within Panerai's modern history for those who appreciate both form and function.

Cool indeed but with a very unreliable movement.

Sorry to hear that, what's the Achilles heel of the movement?

The most common problem has been the lack of power reserve

Even after fully winding and wearing it all day, it stops running a few minutes after removing from wrist. Or if you choose to wear it while sleeping, it would stop overnight. Even Panerai service cannot get it to store some power.

Is the Culprit the Rotor or the Mainspring?

I do not know and every time it comes back from service I am told "it's working fine" which is true except for the PR.

What's even worse is that my 24 has the exact same problem. That one has a movement based on the Valjoux 7750.
