Miranda shares a deeply personal and formative experience, recounting the acquisition of his first Patek Philippe, a Ref. 3796 in rose gold, 25 years prior. This post highlights the profound influence of a chance encounter with a seasoned collector, whose wisdom shaped Miranda's entire collecting philosophy. It's a testament to the community and mentorship that often define a collector's journey.
It was in 1992 that I bought my first Patek Philippe- a reference 3796 in rose gold with a beautiful rose dial.
I 24 years old and here I was with David Duggan, the man responsible for my initial education in the brand I would grow to love.
My interest in Patek was piqued a few years earlier at an auction where I was bidding on a Rolex Oyster date and I came across what I thought and still think is the most beautiful watch ever created the ref 2499.
It was David who guided me into taking the first footsteps towards Patek by extolling the incredible finishing and workmanship.
Unfortunately I don't have pictures of this first watch, it was in the days of 35mm film!
And there were no pc's either!!!
What made the event however was a bizarre coincidence.
As I was buying this 3796, a long standing customer cam as well to pick up his watch, omg what a watch, it was a 1950's Patek minute repeater. Btw he was wearing a 3940.
David introduced me to him, can you imagine the moment, here I was buying a 3796, with him getting a minute repeater.
Our conversations has shaped my whole collecting philosophy, I never met him again but he shaped my future years of the whole ethos of Patek.
His first words were to congratulate me on most wonderful acquisition! He showed his immense knowledge by telling me the history of the '96. He explained every Patek collection has a Calatrava, his was a 2526. He told me this was the king of vintage automatics.
He commended me on acquiring a jewel of watches at a young age. His attitude and genuine affection stayed with me. I was apprehensive that he may have looked down on my mundane 3796 with its 215 movement, but it was totally the opposite.
This he explained is the Patek ethos and philosophy, its about the joy irrespective of value or investment. A lesson that has become ingrained in me.
What followed in the next 10 years is for part 2 of my 25 year love.
Best

About the Patek Philippe 2526 Ref. 2526
The Patek Philippe Reference 2526 is notable as the brand's first serially produced automatic wristwatch. Introduced in 1953, it marked a significant technical advancement for Patek Philippe, housing a self-winding movement at a time when manual-wind mechanisms were still prevalent. This reference is recognized for its clean aesthetic and robust construction, establishing a foundation for future automatic timepieces from the manufacture.
The watch features a 35 mm case, available in 18k yellow gold, 18k rose gold, or platinum. It is powered by the caliber 12-600 AT, an automatic movement with a Gyromax balance and a solid gold rotor, offering a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The crystal is acrylic, protecting a silver dial that often features enamel. The case design is characterized by its smooth bezel and often includes a screw-down case back, contributing to its water resistance.
For collectors, the Reference 2526 is highly sought after due to its historical significance as Patek Philippe's inaugural automatic model. Variants exist with different dial configurations, including those with applied indexes and small seconds, which can vary between the gold and platinum versions. The presence of original bracelets, particularly on rose gold models, can also add to its collectibility, as these were less common than leather strap configurations.

About the Patek Philippe Grand Complications Ref. 2499
The Patek Philippe Reference 2499 is a highly significant perpetual calendar chronograph, representing a pivotal model in the brand's history of complicated wristwatches. It succeeded the Reference 1518 and introduced a larger case diameter and updated aesthetic, establishing a design language that would influence subsequent perpetual calendar chronographs from Patek Philippe for decades. The reference was produced in four distinct series, each with subtle variations in dial layout, pusher style, and case construction.
This reference typically features a case crafted from precious metals, most commonly yellow gold, though examples in rose gold and platinum are known. The case diameter is generally 37.5mm, housing a manual-wind movement, specifically the caliber 13''' Q. This movement integrates a perpetual calendar mechanism with a chronograph function, offering indications for day, date, month, leap year, and moon phases.
