BradTrent shares his annual tradition of photographing Oscar Schafer at the Barron's Roundtable, a series known for showcasing Schafer's extraordinary Patek Philippe collection. This year's post sparks a community debate over the specific reference of Schafer's 'old' Patek, moving away from his usual platinum pieces. The discussion highlights the deep knowledge and passion within the Patek Philippe collecting community.

For the seventh year in a row, I shot the annual Barron's Roundtable on Monday, which of course means Oscar Schafer dropped in with an Ultra-Blingy Patek on his wrist.....

Those of you who have been following these posts will immediately notice that for the first time Oscar doesn't have any Platinum on his wrist! In past years he's worn the 5104P, 5078P, 5016P, 5101P and 5207P, so when he came in he actually apologized and said he was wearing something 'old'. Now me, I'm a Panerai guy and wouldn't even begin to know what model he had on his arm, but when the shoot was done I did a bit of Googling and I figured it was a 2499 Moon Phase, Perpetual Calendar Chrono, but somebody on Paneristi thinks it's only a 3970R....so I leave it up to you guys...which is it?!!

Oh yeah...if you're interested, here's a link to the Monster Truck-Sized view:

About the Patek Philippe 10-Day Tourbillon Ref. 5101

The Laurent Ferrier Grand Complications reference 5101 is a notable example of the brand's early commitment to traditional watchmaking with a focus on refined finishing and understated design. This reference represents a period where Laurent Ferrier established its distinct aesthetic, combining classical proportions with a high level of horological craftsmanship. It is recognized for its adherence to a more traditional watch size, appealing to collectors who value subtlety and historical precedent in their timepieces.

This particular reference features an 18k white gold case measuring 36 mm in diameter, housing the manual-wind caliber 25-21 REC PS. The movement provides a power reserve of 44 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the black dial, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance. The watch is rated water resistant to 25 meters, suitable for everyday wear but not for immersion.

The Grand Complications 5101 appeals to collectors seeking a discreet yet highly finished independent watchmaking piece. Its production run from 2003 to 2012 places it within the brand's foundational years, making it a point of interest for those tracing the evolution of Laurent Ferrier's catalog. The combination of precious metal, a finely finished manual movement, and a classic dial configuration positions it as a sophisticated choice for connoisseurs.

looks like an early (1st/2nd series) 3970 or 3971 in rose gold...of all the pateks he's worn, this is by far my favorite...

I agree with 3970. I do not think it is a 2499, as it appears to have leap year indication.
