iim7v7im7's post initiates a thoughtful discussion on optimizing a watch collection, specifically seeking advice on adding a Patek Philippe Aquanaut (5167 or 5164) or Nautilus 5711. This article delves into the nuances of integrating a new Patek into an existing collection, considering factors like versatility, travel utility, and aesthetic appeal.

Hi,

I am in the process of reducing my collection to a smaller, wearable number of watches. I am considering adding either one of the Aquanauts (5167 or 5164) or a Nautilus 5711.

For context, consider that the new watch will join three other watches: a Rolex Submariner, Patek Gondolo and a Breguet 5177.

I wear the Rolex for outdoor and water-sport activities, the Gondolo can be worn as an everyday piece in the office, dinner out or casually with a pair of jeans. The Breguet seems to get worn for semi-formal and formal dress at the office and for pleasure.

I am looking for an everyday piece that falls between the Submariner and the Gondolo in terms of its wear role. Something that can also be worn in the office, dinner out or casually with a pair of jeans but leans toward sport but can also be worn swimming.

5164:
I do travel internationally about 6 times a year for both business and for pleasure so the dual time complication of the 5164 is of interest.  But its extra thickness (wrist feel) and pointer calendar adjustment through a case pusher is of concern (not easy to set up in a rotation).

5711:
The 5711 is the "classic" Patek/Genta design and leans toward the more formal, refined side of sport, but the polished links on the bracelet make me wonder about it as a scratch magnet.

5164:
The 5167 leans a bit more casual than the 5711 and the rubber strap might be more robust to desk rash and wear (although the clasp will be).

I am taking a visit to NYC soon to see if I can find any of these to wear at three PP ADs. I suspect, post-Christmas I will be unlikely to find one to try but perhaps one of the Nautilus family 5712 or 5726 etc. for wrist feel.

What are your thoughts about these three PP pieces in the context of the other three pieces?

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5726

The Patek Philippe Reference 5726 represents a significant milestone in the manufacture s annual calendar collection, combining the practical sophistication of an annual calendar with a sleek nautical aesthetic. Introduced as part of Patek Philippe s modern sports-elegant lineup, this reference demonstrates the brand s mastery in creating complicated timepieces that maintain everyday wearability. The 5726 builds upon Patek Philippe s rich heritage of calendar complications, offering collectors a contemporary interpretation of haute horlogerie that bridges the gap between dressy complications and contemporary sports watches.

At the heart of the Reference 5726 beats the exceptional Caliber 324 S QA LU 24H/303, an automatic movement that showcases Patek Philippe s technical prowess in calendar mechanisms. This sophisticated caliber features an annual calendar complication that automatically adjusts for months with 30 and 31 days, requiring manual correction only once per year at the end of February. The movement incorporates a 24-hour indication alongside the traditional calendar functions, displaying day, date, month, and moon phases through elegantly arranged subsidiary dials. The self-winding mechanism ensures consistent power delivery while maintaining the thin profile necessary for the watch s refined proportions.

The 40.5mm stainless steel case presents a contemporary interpretation of classic Patek Philippe design language, featuring clean lines and perfectly executed finishing that exemplifies the manufacture s attention to detail. The striking blue sunburst dial creates remarkable depth and luminosity, with its rich color serving as the foundation for the symmetrically arranged calendar displays. Protected by a sapphire crystal and featuring a fixed smooth bezel, the 5726 balances functionality with aesthetic refinement. For collectors, this reference represents an accessible entry point into Patek Philippe s complicated watch segment while offering the prestige and technical excellence associated with one of horology s most revered manufacturers. The combination of stainless steel construction, practical complications, and distinctive design elements positions the 5726 as a highly desirable piece for both seasoned collectors and those building their first serious watch collection.

I own a 5712. It's the most versatile watch in my collection. Doesn't look out of place with a suit. The bracelet is the most comfortable bracelet you will find. Very ergonomic, and just falls over your wrist and you won't feel it's there. IMO, It's even better than the bracelet of the VC Overseas, which is also very ergonomic. Good luck in your hunt. Regards, ian

Plus, I think the 5164 looks the best of the 3 Nautilus models. Cheers, Anthony

I have a 5712 too and love the 5711. Except the fact I like the style much much more than the Aquanauts, I also find its finish more to my taste. The design is much more elegant too, imho of course. The Aquanaut is sportier and I would less be scared to bring it (hence harm it) when doing sports than with the 5711. It's the only reason I would choose the Aquanaut over the 5711 and this is not enough for me. Tell us when you've made up your mind.
