Kreisleriana's original post delves into the evolving market perception of Patek Philippe's World Timer references 5131 and 5231. This discussion is crucial for collectors navigating the shifting landscape of luxury watch values, especially concerning pieces once considered exceptionally rare. Kreisleriana prompts a vital conversation about whether these iconic enamel-dialed timepieces retain their 'collectible' status amidst increased availability and price adjustments.

Hello, when 5131 first came out these pieces where extremely rare and second hand retail price was three times the list price, now there are so man of them on the market ( preowned unworn ones and used ones) that I wonder if they are still worth collecting, prices also went down signifcantly, "cheaper" now than new list price. Actually 5231G is the only world timer in the PP collection in production as far as the official website listed the watch plus shown only with Asian/ Australian dial.

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5131

The Patek Philippe Complications reference 5131 is a World Time model, distinguished by its cloisonné enamel dial depicting a map of the world. This reference is part of a series that showcases Patek Philippe's expertise in both horological complications and traditional decorative arts, offering a functional travel watch with significant aesthetic appeal. It represents a continuation of the brand's long-standing tradition of producing World Time watches, updated with contemporary design elements and a self-winding movement. The 5131 is recognized for its intricate dial work, which varies depending on the specific metal and region depicted.

The watch features a 39.5mm case, available in various precious metals, housing the self-winding Caliber 240 HU. This movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and drives the World Time complication, allowing the wearer to simultaneously view the time in 24 different time zones. The case is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clear visibility of the detailed dial. Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, suitable for everyday wear. The fixed bezel frames the intricate dial, contributing to the watch's refined profile.

As a World Time model with a cloisonné dial, the 5131 appeals to collectors who appreciate both technical sophistication and artisanal craftsmanship. Its limited production and the unique hand-finished nature of each dial contribute to its desirability within the secondary market. The reference fits into Patek Philippe's Complications collection as a high-end travel watch, offering a distinctive alternative to more traditional time-only or chronograph models. Variants typically involve different precious metal cases and corresponding enamel map depictions.

Ask your AD if you are interested to get 5231G at retail and you can get a sense of its popularity. If you can get it less than retail, you should seriously consider it, assuming that you wish to wear it and enjoy the craftsmanship of the enamel dial. If you are purely asking about the financial aspect, our rules would not allow this question. Please clarify what you wish our members to advise you on.

which professed his undying admiration of the brand and his extensive purchase history. I think these are tremendous pieces and anyone should consider themselves extremely fortunate to possess, whether or not such extensive lengths need be taken in order to be acquired.

Rounded, curvy than the 5231 more straight. If you get a good price, it is a watch for a lifetime !

What has changed significantly is Patek’s retail price. The 2008 list price for the J was around $53k. The 2021 list price for the R was around $66k. Now the 2025 piece for the 5231G is $117k. (Wowza!) The used/gray prices have not changed much relative to the change in retail price.
