Dear All

I have a suggestion for lazy Sunday πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜„

If you own a Vintage Patek, how about a small review?

I will kick off with the steel ref 1503

Patek Philippe is quite rightly revered as one of the most accomplished high-end watch manufactures. Vintage Patek command serious prices, unsurprising as the quality of the movements is on another level. Couple this with aesthetics to die for and you can see why vintage Patek is so sought after.

If Patek is already so sought after, there is something that sends collectors into frenzy, steel. Steel Patek’s are so rare they fought over tooth and nail at auction. Now add in a large size and what you get is an astonishingly rare watch. Vintage steel ref 570 Calatrava now fetch between $100-150,000. (Euro 70-100,000).

The ref 1503 is an exceptionally rare steel large size 35mm Calatrava with beautiful tear drop lugs powered by the beautiful calibre 12’120”. It also has 20mm lug width. It wears like a modern size because of its narrow bezel and wide lugs. I am not sure if any other steel Calatrava has 20mm lug width.

One with a black dial and Breguet numbers was sold by Christies for CHF 385,000 in 2007 and more recently Philipp’s sold one in their 2016 auction for CHF52,500 with an Arabic numbers dial.

This version has a superb two-tone dial with enamel engravings for the minute markers. It is estimated that are no more than between 3 and 5 pieces made in this very sumptuous configuration. I estimate that no more than 20-25 pieces in total were ever made- now that is a limited edition.  All were made in the 1940’s and the reference was superseded by the reference 1513. This model also existed as a two-tone version with gold lugs and crown as the ref 1503/2 and as an all gold version ref 1509.

Here are some other examples;

It also exists in steel and gold

And gold as ref 1509

Hope you enjoyed this rare beauty!

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 570

The Patek Philippe reference 570 is a classic Calatrava-style dress watch, representing a significant period in the brand's production of time-only pieces. It is distinguished by its clean lines and minimalist aesthetic, embodying the traditional design principles that Patek Philippe is known for in its non-complicated watches. The reference 570 was offered in various metals and dial configurations, making each example unique within the broader series of Patek Philippe's round cased watches from the mid-20th century.

This particular example features an 18k white gold case with a diameter of 38mm. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by a manual wind movement, reflecting the common practice for high-end dress watches of its era. The water resistance is rated at 30 meters, typical for a watch of this type and period.

The reference 570 appeals to collectors seeking a pure expression of Patek Philippe's watchmaking heritage, particularly those interested in the brand's foundational dress watch designs. Its various iterations, including different case materials and dial finishes, offer a range of options for discerning collectors. The enduring appeal of the 570 lies in its understated elegance and its representation of a specific era of Patek Philippe's design philosophy.

Most war years production of Patek were kept to a minimal. Therefore definitely a limited production and its in steel , all the more not an easy metal to work on the part a watchmaker. My observation. Best wishes! Geross.
