Patek_3944's post offers a deeply personal and meticulously planned approach to building a Patek Philippe collection, demonstrating that passion for horology transcends economic background. His thoughtful selection of four pieces from Patek's 'Golden Era' provides a unique framework for collectors aiming to cover key complications and styles.

Hello my Patek friends,
I am so pleased to be posting on this great forum.
Captains of industry, heads of commerce and humble working class people like myself.  We can all share the love of Patek Philippe.

I have been a lurker for years and I have read hundreds (if not thousands) of posts.  From the oil tanker owners, to the beer barons from Thailand...... I have enjoyed the stories and the love of all things Patek Philippe.
Unfortunately I could not afford the great treasures that many here possess.... I last worked in a waste processing plant in Brisbane, Australia.  I was fired for spending too much time on this very forum! Purist Pro!

Brisbane is a small capital city - a place made famous by Patek Philippe when they accidentally added Brisbane to the first release 5230.  This was of course immediately corrected and the city removed from future 5230s without mention.

I wanted a Collection of Patek Philippes.
I decided to buy pieces from the Golden Era of Patek.  From when Patek started to release larger sized pieces and also added some "useful complications."
I think we are talking late 90s and I also wanted to put up an end date.  I think the end of the Geneva Seal would be a good point.  Not that anything is wrong with the fabulous Patek Seal...... but I wanted to set a good range for the collection to follow.

I studied the forums hard, I got the old catalogues (eBay sellers from Italy are expensive) from around the world and I designed a humble collection.

1 piece is not a collection at all, 2 is simply a pair and 3 is really not enough to be considered a collection.  The Asian number for bad luck "4" was to be the perfect number for a humble collection.

I started to think about what I would want in a collection...... I think back to the key complications....... what would they be......
So I decided on the following as a start......

1) Some sort of Calendar (something more than just a date function)
2) Some sort of Travel Companion (to be able to tell the time in a different timezone at 1 glance)
3) A dress watch for important functions (like the dust bin man ball?)
4) A dream watch to achieve in the future if my lotto numbers ever come up or I inherit a fortune

1) I looked and searched and I really fell in love with the 5035 Annual Calendar.  The worlds first annual calender featuring the 315 movement and a nice size of 37mm.

2) I thought the 5134 would be the choice but I eventually went for the 5110.  The coolest World Time since the 2523 from the 1960s.  The price of the predesesor of the 5110 is stagering!

3) Many suitable choices here..... 3919, 5119, 5196, 5107, 5127, 5227, 6000, many very good pieces here.  In the end I chose 2 pieces.  The white gold 5127 and 5296.  A perfect pair to lust over and possess.

4) My dream piece to hold out for..... Dare I say it..... (As a humble working class guy) 5070, 5170, 5960.

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5134

The Calatrava reference 5134 is a travel time model, distinguished by its dual time zone functionality within the classic Calatrava aesthetic. It features a second hour hand for tracking a home time zone, a complication that enhances its utility for collectors who appreciate understated travel watches. This reference represents a continuation of Patek Philippe's tradition of offering practical complications in a refined, dress-watch format, appealing to those who seek functionality without overt sportiness.

This reference is typically presented in a 37mm case, available in various precious metals. It houses the manual-winding Caliber 215 PS FUS, a movement known for its slim profile and reliability. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, providing clear visibility of the dial and protecting the intricate mechanics. The design maintains the clean lines characteristic of the Calatrava collection, ensuring legibility for both local and home time indications.

The 5134 appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's approach to the travel time complication, particularly those who prefer a manually wound movement. It offers a more contemporary alternative to earlier travel time references while retaining the traditional Calatrava design language. The various metal options and dial configurations provide choices for different collector preferences, making it a versatile piece within the brand's complicated offerings.

I also think 4 is a good number for a collection, actually is the number of Pateks I currently own and I believe you can cover all the basis pretty well with this amount. And we also share a couple of references, like the 5110 and 5960. On your other post, I said I prefer 5127 to 5296, but having 'curves' already in the collection, I would go for the 5296. And for a dream watch: I have a 5960P and is my favourite watch by far. But given your plan and having an AC already, I would go for a manual

I can only agree that the remarkable variety of our backgrounds/lives/locations/etc. is one of the key factors in making this the most interesting (and instructive) watch forum on this planet... I'm just sorry you got fired because of it -- but I'm sure many of us can relate to what it means to spend lots of time reading and learning on this beautiful forum, including at work And thank-you for sharing such a thoroughly and cleverly designed collection... surprisingly, my favorite of your four el

The WT was the first Patek that really captured my interest, and so the 5110 is the star for me here. I can’t say I’ve ever seen it in this metal, it’s beautiful.
