Chewbacca's impassioned post challenges the immediate, often vitriolic, online backlash against Patek Philippe's new Cubitus line. He argues that many critics are forming strong opinions without having experienced the watches in person, suggesting an 'absurd reaction' fueled by clickbait culture. This article synthesizes community responses, exploring the nuances of collector expectations and the broader context of luxury watch releases.

Everywhere I go I see some click loving “expert” tell me this line is defective somehow??  Just wait and look at them. The reaction has been absurd.  You’d think this line was called the Patek Kardashian line based on the vitriol I’ve read.  If you’re going to get this worked up without holding them in your hand first you need to take to check yourself.

About the Patek Philippe Cubitus Ref. 5821

The Patek Philippe reference 5821, known as the Cubitus, represents a distinctive design within the brand's offerings, characterized by its unique case architecture. This model deviates from more traditional round or rectangular forms, presenting a profile that emphasizes sculptural qualities and a departure from conventional watchmaking aesthetics. It is a piece that appeals to collectors seeking Patek Philippe's less common and more architecturally focused creations, showcasing a different facet of the manufacture's design capabilities.

The case of the 5821 Cubitus is crafted from 18k white gold, featuring a substantial yet refined presence on the wrist. While specific dimensions contribute to its unique wearability, the overall construction is designed to highlight its distinctive shape. The watch is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement, reflecting a commitment to traditional horological principles. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, ensuring clarity and durability.

This reference holds particular interest for collectors who appreciate Patek Philippe's ventures into unconventional case designs. It stands apart from the brand's more widely recognized collections, offering a piece that combines high-end watchmaking with a strong artistic statement. The Cubitus series, including the 5821, illustrates the breadth of Patek Philippe's design philosophy beyond its classic complications and sports models, appealing to those who value rarity and distinctive form.

The simple 3 hand with date on bracelet would have been a better launch watch. We’ll never know. I quite like them, I’ll never own one but that can be said for many lol 🍻

metal before judgement can be passed ! Same for Cubitus. A friend who is in the watch biz was amazed on how good 5822P looked in the metal on his small wrist.

If people don't like it should they remain silent? Only the cheering crowd is allowed to speak nowadays?

The 11:59 overreactions were insane. My favorite is each year when Rolex announces their new models, there are always people on rolexforums.com who act like it's the worst thing that has ever happened in their lives. I mean, that's an incredible life, right there, if the new bezel color of a GMT is life ruining.

...where you live. The question, in a sense, depends on other factors 'first'. One thing we can 'bank on', timepieces with non-round cases may be appearing more often than 'modern' norms (past two or three decades). Is it the 1970s we saw a lot of non-round cases as fashionable?
