Kpk recounts a private dinner with independent watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin, offering a firsthand account of the brand's philosophy and diverse creations. The post highlights Speake-Marin's commitment to offering a range of watches, from accessible to haute horlogerie, all while maintaining a distinctive design DNA and reflecting the watchmaker's 30-year journey in horology.

dinner to meet with well known Independent Watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin last Friday. The event was organised by Millenary Post (a well known watch and luxury publication) and Bezel (a well known watch boutique chain).

I have always read about Peter Speake-Marin and seen pictures of his creations; but had never actually seem them in the flesh. On Friday I got to meet the man himself and see the creations. I must say I was impressed. As an independent brand, Speake-Marin has a low annual production (approx 900 watches a year) yet manages to have a range of watches - beginning from the 'relatively' affordable to the super-expensive. This is worth mentioning because there are many superb independent brands which have amazing creations, but you need to sacrifice an arm and a leg to attain ownership. I think Speak-Marin has something for most. And if one does purchase a timepiece that is on the affordable side, you are still acquiring the entire Speake-Marin DNA: an excellent executed case, dial, hands, and truly original and distinctive design. While the movements at this level are not entirely "in-house" (they are made by Vaucher for him), they benefit from his own expertise as one of the world's elite independent watchmakers. He mentioned that he has come full circle as many years ago, he used to make movements for Vaucher; and now they make for him.

A timepiece is also reflection of so many other things and not just in-house movement or not. Peter is a very likable man and by getting to know him and his story, you get drawn to his creations. They are all a reflection of him, and his approx 30 years journey into the world of horology. So each piece is a reflection of his spirit.

A huge thanks to Jonathan Ho of the Millenary Post for the invitation. Photos below.

Indeed its collection is starting to propose a very wide array of watches. I've seen and heard one of his Minute Repeater in Paris and it was very convincing. In the end, I think that my favorite is the Resilience with its Roman numerals, as well as the Velsheda in a lesser extent. Thanks a lot for sharing the experience and your interesting thoughts about his brand :) Cheers, Mark
