While looking at these watches, I was thinking about one of Joe's posts about vintage Rolex watches.

He basically said that from the simple to the most sought after, there was always a level of collection which was Worth it.

Here are two 1016: One is quite common, with its matte dial, the other is more difficult to find, an early version, certainly from 1960 / 61, with its chapter ring gilt dial.

BUT both are charming!

Now, we have a duo of " 4 lines ", both being gilt, the 5508, which is certainly a later version, and the 5512, with is from... 1965 ( an important year for some of us... wink  )

With or without crownguards, your "4  Lines ", how do you like it?

We won't all agree, here, but I must confess a certain weakness for the no crownguard one...

Best,

Nicolas

About the Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016

The reference 1016 is a notable iteration of the Explorer model, recognized for its robust design and clear legibility. It represents a period of consistent design language for the Explorer line, maintaining core aesthetic principles while incorporating incremental technical refinements. This reference is particularly distinguished by its long production run, allowing for various dial and case nuances across its manufacturing years.

This reference features a 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case, providing a durable and functional enclosure for the automatic caliber 1570 movement. The movement offers a power reserve of approximately 42-48 hours. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal, contributing to its vintage appeal and period-correct specifications. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, underscoring its design for practical use.

For collectors, the reference 1016 holds interest due to its enduring design and the variations found within its production. Different dial types, such as gilt and matte, are observed, each appealing to specific collecting preferences. Its straightforward time-only display and tool-watch aesthetic make it a representative example of the Explorer series' foundational principles.

Nicolas… I especially love the 5508 4 liner, edges of the dial turning brown, if I see it correctly? I'm captivated by the beauty of gilt dial… Much much better appreciated under the sun Best, Sam

.. numbers 2 and 3 please, ( would take the 5512 as well, though..) - I absolutely love that CR & gilt on the 1016: classic & retro, but sooo charmnig ! After some deliberation between the second Duo, the 5508 please - no CG's is cool.. Still having another superbly patinated 1016 in front of my eyes, (I was privileged to be shown by the friendly owner on the occadion of a recent visit), also a classic, that is starting to haunt me.. Thus, just have to wait for my turn, therefore I will stay tun

I am at home, relaxing and with enough time to post something I promised to you Nicolas, and with time to view these beautiful examples of vintage Rolex. All I can say, is that it is so difficult to decide which one to chose among these you show. I guess I finally would go after the 5508, as you know my fondness for Submariners. But any other one would make me very happy!! Thanks for sharing these beauties! Have a nice Labor Day my friend! And of course happy Labor Day for all our friends here!

And I must say that these 2 are terrific. Like you, I would go for the 5508, because I have a weakness for these no crownguard Subs, and because this dial is very much my taste. But the 5512 is something, too! Un abrazo, Amigo. Nicolas.

.......its just not an exclusive club for only those with yachts in Monaco and penthouse apartments in Manhattan!!! As similar argument can also be made for tropic variations.....you can get true tropical dials, but you can also get dials with less monetary value, less tropic....more damage....but absolutely charming and desirable!! Yes.....vintager Rolex can be a deep and broad world.
