Turki's original post showcasing a platinum Rolex 1908 prototype sparked significant discussion among collectors. This piece represents a departure from Rolex's typical sport watch offerings, venturing into classical dress watch aesthetics. Turki's images provide a rare glimpse into a timepiece that has proven elusive in the market, prompting the community to consider its design, availability, and value proposition.

About the Rolex Ref. Perpetual1908

The Perpetual 1908 represents a distinct dress watch offering from Rolex, introduced as part of the Perpetual collection. It draws inspiration from early Rolex models and aims to provide a more classically styled timepiece compared to the brand's sportier or more robust professional lines. This reference emphasizes traditional watchmaking aesthetics and a refined profile, positioning it as a dedicated dress watch within the contemporary Rolex catalog, distinct from the Oyster Perpetual or Datejust families.

This particular reference features a case crafted from precious metals, typically 18k gold, with a slim profile designed for comfort and understated elegance. It houses a self-winding mechanical movement, specifically the Caliber 7140, which is visible through a sapphire case back. The movement provides a substantial power reserve and incorporates Rolex's Superlative Chronometer certification, ensuring high levels of precision and reliability. The watch is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal on the front.

For collectors, the Perpetual 1908 appeals to those seeking a more traditional and less overtly sporty Rolex. Its classic design, precious metal construction, and visible movement represent a departure from many of the brand's more common offerings. The collection offers variants in different dial colors and case materials, providing options for collectors interested in a refined, time-only or small seconds complication timepiece.

Would need to know if the guilloche pattern is done by hand with a rose engine : stamped or laser engraved would be a no-go at that price point!

I almost think the way the small seconds reflects like in comparison to the guilloche pattern makes it dramatic here

But I am afraid it is trying too hard (too shiny, perhaps too many details). Just compare it to a Breguet Classique or Urban Jürgensen. (Fotos are not mine). However, I haven’t seen it yet at AD.

Is that it doesn't have a screw down crown. Rolex has always meant ultimate peace of mind and versatility of use to me, for that reason the lack of a screw down crown is a real bummer, especially on an automatic!
