We all know we start our judging by the dial but then we quickly size up all the other elements to grade a watch. I know the term unpolished is over used and misunderstood but case condition can set watches apart.

So unpolished can mean looks like new which means either the watch is new old stock NOS or to the eye of the beholder it is all shining without any scratches but unless nos it could have had a Rolex service center polish which is the best or it has been polished with varying results an level of skill. On the other hand unpolished mean the watch appears in its original state with very flat sides, thick lugs and well shaped in original state bevels. Not as  shiny as nos can even be a little dull.

At the end of the day for an absolute definitive answer it is hard to judge without comparing examples side by side and even then you are guessing. For me I judge based on how flat the side of the case is because polishing creates curvature and second the shape of the bevel thick at the tip getting thinner inward. But skilled re-finisher are getting better.

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512

Rolex Submariner Reference 5512

The Submariner reference 5512 represents Rolex's no-date variant within the Submariner series. Distinguished by its clean dial layout without date complication, this reference was produced from 1962 to 1989, spanning nearly three decades of manufacturing.

The 40mm stainless steel case houses either caliber 1560 or 1570 automatic movements, providing 42-48 hours of power reserve. The watch features a black dial, unidirectional rotating bezel with aluminum insert, and acrylic crystal. Water resistance extends to 200 meters, with the watch fitted to a stainless steel bracelet.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking the fundamental Submariner aesthetic without date functionality. The extended production period and dual caliber usage create multiple variations within the 5512 designation. The no-date configuration offers symmetrical dial proportions that attract purists within the collecting community.

A dial or a superb case? Of course, both is the ideal answer, but it is too rare to fall on a watch which has both a great case and dial. On another note, we have to be very careful when a watch comes with a too nice case and so called intact bevels. The last trend is to weld some material to make the case look like a nos one. Best, Nicolas

But the eye can be tricked without experience. For me the watch starts with the dial then the case jumps on you with both feet.

Not likely with the guys I know! This kind of wear is hard to simulate. Cazalea

Some watches in the same model but with small changes (in dial, case, bezel, insert, crown, hands and lugs as in the Speedmaster) make it spectacular or awful. The other day I saw a 5513 matte dial with markers at colour dark brown amazing!! like a price too. Ha Ha.. Juan

Dial or case? In some cases, case. But most of the time, for me, dial. Like Bill said, I care for fat and thick, not shiny and sharp, which can be recreated by skilled refinishing. Well, even the thickness can be possibly done, especially given the ever-changing new technologies for example laser welding. The time for a perfect replica 3D printed dial may eventually come, too, but much later IMHO.
