Bill's exploration of the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512 gilt dials offers a fascinating comparative study for vintage Rolex enthusiasts. His detailed photo essay highlights the subtle yet significant differences between 2-line and 4-line dials, as well as the coveted black and tropical brown variations. This post serves as an invaluable visual guide for collectors navigating the nuances of these highly sought-after references.

I had an opportunity yo snap a few pictures compaiting two sets of Rolex 5512 gilt watches. Some very attractive pieces. The brown dials require direct sunlight to appreciate them. I know there are two camps of thought one being the perfect black gilt trumps a brown dial the other favors the brown dial. I think both work but as notted sun light is required.

What are your thoughts.

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512

Rolex Submariner Reference 5512

The Submariner reference 5512 represents Rolex's no-date variant within the Submariner series. Distinguished by its clean dial layout without date complication, this reference was produced from 1962 to 1989, spanning nearly three decades of manufacturing.

The 40mm stainless steel case houses either caliber 1560 or 1570 automatic movements, providing 42-48 hours of power reserve. The watch features a black dial, unidirectional rotating bezel with aluminum insert, and acrylic crystal. Water resistance extends to 200 meters, with the watch fitted to a stainless steel bracelet.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking the fundamental Submariner aesthetic without date functionality. The extended production period and dual caliber usage create multiple variations within the 5512 designation. The no-date configuration offers symmetrical dial proportions that attract purists within the collecting community.

The easy answer would be both black and brown. If I had to choose with a gun on my head, I would say your 2 lines brown. Your collection is breathtaking, my friend. Best, Nicolas

... to go into vintage Rolex after viewing your posts! What a fantastic collection! I think my preferences goes to the brown 4 liners... But would be extremely happy with either one! Best Blomman

However the real delta is quality examples. They are literally double the price. A 4 line 5512 with no hand drag is a real rarity add the fact that it is a full set. You know where I am going but there are few and far between. The browns have a lot going for them also when in perfect shape. Bill
